Default They Shall Not Grow Old

This new Peter Jackson thing is intriguing, apparently he got hold of a load of archive footage from WWI, tidied it up, colourised it, hired lip readers to dub sections and inserted interviews with veterans. There's something really odd about seeing the stuff in colour, it seems to make it simultaneously both more and less real.

wish they'd colorise something that's not about soldiers - remembrance day is basically a fascist cult or why not talk about the refugees, the civilians the colonies etc

this is a nice chat about the reality factor: http://www.dissensus.com/showthread.php?t=14203 (also involves soldiers)

i suspect it connects with dematerialisation

Yeah, I mean I think it's important but it's very one dimensional. A lot of people seem to want to view the day as a remembrance of 'our soldiers' and no one else, soldiers or otherwise. I imagine there's also the case of funding and what the state thinks should be focused on.
