a Peter Frampton tweet went around last year where he says 55 million streams of "baby I love your way" earned him $1,700.

I sympathise with the artists who are losing out on money, OTOH would 55 million people have BOUGHT 'Ooh baby I love your way'?

What can be done, though? Short of a technological apocalypse I can't see people - especially those who have grown up with streaming - being happy about returning to the old model of 15 quid for an album.

Same thing is going to happen with movies/TV soon, if it hasn't already.

But yeah, not an ideal state of affairs for musicians/artists - and perhaps not even for listeners/viewers.

better question is: how does this royalty rate compare to radio airplay? I'm not sure, but vaguely recall artists being able to make some decent money if they had a big radio hit single.
