although hopefully we're not talking 2010s grime because some of that stuff is worse than modern dubstep.

Not to be a cunt about it but I can't understand how someone could actively enjoy dubstep. There's no joy in it. No intensity. It's like a two bar electric heater.

Moping around in a dark room and some drab noise going wrump wrump wrump how can you get anything out of that? I don't understand it.

The lad I was with had never heard dubstep. He wanted to hear some so I got some up on YouTube and he couldn't believe what he was hearing. "What's this got to do with dub?" I was trying to explain what had happened in music over the last 20 years. Big job.

I used to be very into it, nowadays not so much, but I still like and have a soft spot for the '04/'05 stuff - early Skream, D1, DMZ - and a few of the later producers like Pev and 2562.

oh don't start this again as I'll start calling out people in grime and dubstep again, for the record i agree with you to an extent... chef on rinse 05 was good though

Why can't we say the same for deeptech though? that went bad even quicker than dubstep.

anyway a lot of the abstract electronics stuff i like is quite joyless if you're looking for music values and not sound poetry. that was eventually dubstep's problem, and I'm sorry to say that early incarnation of dissensus engendered that we must worship the continuum mentality. this is why i kind of wish simon never told it to the journalist types and let them find it out.

yeah sure, but my mum thinks darkside is just vacuum cleaner noises, chipmunks and fart sounds.

And from her perspective she's not wrong, but why wouldn't those sounds not be valid?

I'm not carrying a torch for deeptech. That's equally baffling to me. Low intensity musics. Low wattage.

Is this a philosophy question? Bear with me in that case

It's not that the sounds are invalid, insufficiently musical, I just can't, and I shouldn't harp on about this I know, I just can't see what positive and desirable biochemical metabolic spiritual auric emotional state that greyscale could possibly correlate to.

It's not a region of human experience I recognise. I don't know this place. It looks like a bus stop.

the same state that most dance music after a while correlates to. the idea of production. the bloke who works at tribe records @alextheomusic on twitter is a mate of mine and he's always appraising productions, and I'm always like yeah but the idea of *production* as an end in itself only really mmakes sense in the realms of sound art.

there's your answer. reverence and worship. and an artificially constructed idea of london and rudeness. fact is the original hardcore-jungle was both blacker and whiter than its champions grant. loads of people got into hardcore-jungle from post-punk as well. dubstep did this when it was already an established genre, in essence when the standardisation of what 'proper dubstep' was already codified. but whilst matthew's idea of capitalism being a driving innovator of dance music is correct specialisation is antithetical to a scene maintaining momentum after the fact.
