The ascent of Kartel. God amongst men.

In 1978 Jamaica's preeminent musical figure publicly brought the two leaders of the country's main political factions together in an attempt to end their deadly conflict.

In a darkly poetic symmetry 2010 saw Jamaica's prime minister publicly bring together the two leaders of the country's main musical empires together in an attempt to end their deadly conflict.

The war between Kartel and mavado was not just a war between egos, but a battle for the nation's soul. Mavado was overtly christian, soulful and socially conservative. Kartel, an amoral agnostic who toyed with the country's sexual taboos and bleached his skin. Mavado was a man of god. Kartel, as we now know, was a murderer.

kartel's tenderness in the face of enormity; the tacky majesty of the strings. sweet and mourning all at once. poignant. kartel as woman. he becomes his own camille.

i like that croaking, sawing sound in the verses. like a crocodile with an electric toothbrush.

apparitional melodies through earthly voice. sedimentic phonetics. his vocal timbre like soil.

the cry of a mother losing her child. of a man lost at sea. the riddim sounds like a titanic, oak ship. weathering the storm to discover the new world.

"his father is a fish"

similar emotional tone to that kartel one, more aspirational though. that aspiration reflects popcaan's dumbness; there's an emotional sophistication lacking. a vulnerability without the poignance. like a child covered in spaghetti hoops. he needs protection and guidance, but not for any reason informed by pathos. he's like scooby doo. "bus boy head very often". nigerian dinner lady disheveled hair.

the riddim is really gorgeous. scope. blue skies. the top of a mountain on a crisp, sunny day. triumph after defeat.

the sentimentality you feel after arriving home at 5 in the morning after a night out.

unrequited love.

rapture.

religion as the central metaphor of human emotional grandeur. the language of revolution and war try to attain these heights, but religion is the only lexicon by which we can speak to the utmost of ourselves.

soaring. prosperity theology. "sparkling when i walk out". martyrdom.

conquering fear.

"say the god for the gully no 'fraid of them"

glacial. frosted breaths in a tundra. echoes in the snow.

the sleek body of sports car. a Miami beachside reflected on it's scarlet chrome frame.

those two worlds coexisting.

"Bullet for share & caring"

Maudlin and melodramatic in a way few can manage, like something out of an Oshima film. There's a humor here, but it's offset by just how much he wants to convey romantic tragedy in the violence. Definitely thought of himself the way Byron thought of himself.

Oh yeah found it

This music is morally, spiritually and aesthetically degenerate and I have nothing but the profoundest scorn for those who listen to it, those who promote it, those who profit from it and those who enjoy it. This is not reggae music. I say this again so that there can be no ambiguity. This is not reggae music. This is a debased and squalid expression of a debased and squalid culture. I firmly reject it and all who associate themselves with it. Bun Fire pon dem. 🔥
