Midsommar

really enjoyed this, have been trying to find pagany wickerman-like films for a while but theres not many that hit the spot, this one definetly does the job. Great soundtrack and visual effects. kinda lacks the sinister humour and songs that made the wickerman so great but cant compare too harshly.

I enjoyed it more than heriditary, which was still worth a watch.

Im not too keen on how the 'inbred' kid with the deformed head was used as a kind of creepy totem tho, the little girl in hereditary had quite a strange looking face too, and when the boys face contorts thats one of the freakiest bits so seems to be a bit of a theme of his. i guess its an effective tactic but comes off a bit old fashioned and freakshow like in midsommar, kind of unneccesary i thought.

I can see the objection. I read an interview with Ari Aster where he says there is a sort of political allegory going on about the insularity of communities, so perhaps being guided by a product of inbreeding has some relevance to that.

Obviously his face is being used for shockvalue though (assuming it's a prosthetic).

I haven't yet seen the film, but having read a lot about it I am less keen than I was - it all seems a bit too dedicated to shock value, like Lars von Trier Mark II, or some of Darren Aronofsky's films (who I've gone off in a big way). I'm sure it's very well made, but I'm having second thoughts about bothering...

Tbh there isn't THAT much gore in it.

There's a scene fairly early on which is very gory and I think supposed to be shocking and a guy in front of me burst out laughing. This happened quite a lot, especially towards the end - and I reckon it's quite intentionally funny at some of these moments.

Maybe that's Von trier like, I've never seen a film by him. But I have read that his latest about a serial killer is seen by many as this black comedy which others see as quite a self serious sadistic thing

Kind of interesting to think about political correctness re: horror - given that one of the main tropes in horror fiction/film is mentally ill people running anock with knives.

Noted about the gore - it just sounds a bit sadistic for the sake of it. Obviously I haven't seen it tho.

Von Trier - don't bother. Breaking the Waves is notable, and Emily Watson is always worth watching, but ultimately emotional porn. I totally gave up with him after Antichrist, which remains one of the laugh out loud worst films I have ever seen (but simultaneously too nasty to watch again ironically for laughs). Though not quite as bad as 21 Grams, the actual worst film of all time, with the two worst actors in the world* disastrously sharing a screen.

*tho Ben Affleck may disrupt this duopoly

To be honest, by the standards of horror it isn't even that sadistic. Without spoiling anything you only actually see a couple of deaths (not too gory either) onscreen. It's quite fucked up but in a totally predictable way. It's definitely not like "Saw" or "Hostel" or whatever.

I only vaguely remember Kill List - and at the time I thought that it was really great up until the end, where it all went a bit silly.

That often seems to be the way with horror films. Having to unveil the lurking threat, and the lurking threat is a bit ridiculous.

You're right Baboon - 21 Grams is utter shite.

Rich, you've seen a lot of films, so the question must be - have you ever seen a worse one? I can genuinely say that I don't think I have - the mix of pretension and ineptitude is catastrophic.

On Kill List - the ending isn't up to the standard of the rest, and seems a bit derivative, but I don't think it was bad enough to ruin the film.

I struggle to think of worse off the top of my head. I can't stand that director in general, there was the Amores Peres one which was a mess but the critics seemed to like, I think by 21 Grams some were like "hang on" and then by Babel everyone was thinking "What have we done? We've created a monster" and backing away from his as fast as possible... just a terrible director.

Is he the guy that did The Revenant?

I expected to hate that one but I loved loved loved it.

Birdman was shite though.

Anyway, midsomarrrrrr

Funny, I was reading a book yesterday which had this weird digression about the guy The Revenant (and the previous film) was based on. But it was written in the 80s long before that.
Anyway, you're right, sorry... back to Midsommar which I must watch even though every review I've seen has been very negative.
