Thou shalt not adulterate is the proper rendering of thou shalt not commit adultery and it refers to race mixing

protochronism is a cool word

invented traditions is a common thing probably across most countries and peoples i should have thought

it's also a microgenre subject for historians - Hugh Trevor Roper did a book called The Invention of Scotland, about how most of the elements of Scottish tradition and folklore were actually cobbled together long after the fact

a parallel would be with genres and music traditions - which often have mythified origin stories ... received wisdom and legend encrusting over the messier truth

what's the famous Joan Didion quote about needing stories to live?

yodelling is insane isn't it?

the technique involved must be staggering

still has a following in various parts of Europe, but during a swathe of the early-to-mid 20th Century it was a major form of popular music, partly through it filtering into early country with the yodelling cowboy phenomenon

this dude is supposed to be Mariah Carey of yodelling

That guy is a star in Germany

Reading a fascinating book about diet and dentition in isolated Swiss valleys (and in isolated communities around the world) in the early 1930s.
In the Loetschental one evening each August, the menfolk would light fires on surrounding mountainsides and yodel "one for all and all for one" through their perfectly white teeth 'til the early dawn.
This was just before the government built a road up there and a Spar opened selling white bread and jam, which fucked their teeth like everyone else's forever, of course.

This went top ten in late 1988 as a novelty dance/chart/yodel hit
