Took me surprisingly long to work out - i was like, "who is this infamous music journalist who knows Luke and Barty and Nina? How many infamous music journalists are there, anyway?"

Actually seeing the drawing made it click

Seem to remember he has an obsession with orgasm as a righteous organisational principle in music, he likes things to head towards a climax - that's why he hates minimalist music and ambient music, cos it never EXPLODES.

nietzche is very alt-right. isolated and alone thinking you're enlightened and superior to everyone else. the appeals to the antiquated (thus spake zarathustra).

his righting is these sort of emotional outbursts that guise as intellectual positions which is a very alt right thing.

Sounds like how I imagine the stereotypical dissensus contributor. Spends too much time by himself, intellectually haughty, epigrammatic writing, always bewailing cultural downfall.

One of Burroughs’ theories was that the cave paintings of Lascaux were aspirational rather than representational. They were painted as part of an occult rite to successfully hunt animals - not as a retrospective tribute to good hunters.

Burroughs was also big into sex magick - the power of the orgasm. The idea that at climax the conscious and subconscious merge - allowing your desires to manifest and become real.

So maybe a question to ask is whose desires are being manifested with the state of wanking in 2019 and the increased reliance on porn? I think Nina was onto something in One Dimensional Woman with her comparison of the grim joylessness of contemporary porn with the historical stuff she dug up.

I think as poetix said unthread that there is a retreat from a zany indivualised capacity for fantasy here - which is replaced with binging.

Same as music. You don’t get weeks or months imagining what Tago Mago sounds like and then the revelation of actually hearing it. You just skip through it immediately on YouTube and quickly move onto the next thing.

The Protestant Puritan in me worries about this but maybe insisting every orgasm is a sacred act is just as messed up. The yoof seem way more articulate and emotionally literate than I was, so maybe it will all work out ok.

You're onto something with that.

About 10 years ago or so there was a lot of chat about geeks having taken over culture. It was referring to things like the advent of smart phones and social media, nerd genres (superheroes, fantasy) becoming popular, ‘geek chic’, Big Bang theory, Steve Jobs’ lionization, etc.

However it speaks to a more fundamental shift in how cultural interaction is carried out. Social media has gamed interpersonal interaction so as to favour introverts. Rather than being about who’s got the highest cheekbones or biggest muscles, it’s become who’s got the best opinion or the wittiest comment.

Maybe what I was saying about making society like the womb, was really about making the world comfortable for an introvert. Online shopping, social media, porn, etc. all in part replicate interpersonal experiences in a way that’s less anxious for the anti-social.

when i first went to secondary school there was a boy with aspergers who'd use the school email system to send me these strange pictures of cats with captions written in white on them.

at the time i had no idea what it was, but now i realise that they were early memes. what i thought was just him being strange was actually him being at the cultural vanguard. he was communicating with me in a way that 10 years later all young people would routinely communicate with each other.

.

most porn people are consuming these day is devoid of (or uploaded divorced from their original) storylines. there's no music, no characters, no dialogue, no background setting. it's purely functional. just scratching an itch or even just feeding an addiction.

we've discussed previously in the beyond soul thread about a similar process happening in music, and you could say the same has happened in hollywood too.

Hardcore Henry felt like someone took POV porn and applied it to an action film, like a primitive form of VR.

I can't help but think of the mass shooters acting like they're in a video game when I see that clip.

Yeah, apparently he had a playlist for it too. And the guys on 8chan were talking about his "high score".

one thing porn actresses do on social media is have an amazon wish list, so that fans can buy the actresses presents. it really taps into a weird psychology. these men trying to be a provider figure or a big shot boyfriend who spoils their girl. these actresses are no longer merely fulfilling a physiological need, but an emotional one. they're acting a surrogate girlfriends, but in this incredibly distant and transactional way. vessels which men project their love at, without receiving it back.

i interviewed the Beautiful South once, for my sins. One of them - not the main guy, the smaller chap - said he'd tried to collect all his spunk at one point. but it didn't really accumulate, just evaporated away to a sort of greyish film. not the bucketloads he'd expected.

So who’s knocked one out to Joan Collins in her appalling double act that was The Bitch and The Stud?

Wonderwoman or Daisy Duke?

When every program from Benny Hill to Kenny E had an erotic stooge, the entire nation swamped in suppressed desires.

That’s real poverty.
