Soul Jazz
doin it doing it doing it right.
Noise 2 has some obscure stuff and throws light on some groups that (barely)no one knows.
Hmm Pulsallama huh ? hey Matt they heard us talking !

Keeps eyes on Soul Jazz because Noise 3 ,
essentially the NYC 1979 -1984 '(possibly post -) No wave -proto electro' collection is a bit edgier and darker ( 'cuz i like it like that) .
Slated for mid '06

Big Apple Rappin' [the Early Days of Hip-Hop Culture in New York City 1979-1982] 2CD

the limited lead 12" for the big apple rappin cd is ace - just boys boasting and striving for cash gentley and enthusiastically
it all seems so innocent, far removed from hip hop now, which has all the money but looks so bored, everything in the world for everyone to see, even with the price tags on in the last 50 cent video but tired, cynical and unreally bored.

Keep eyes on Soul Jazz Noise 3

These look great, esp that Big Apple Rappin compilation. Volume 1 of Soul Jazz's New York Noise was strong too, esp with the remastered version of Mars' Helen Forsdale (also, the track selection was more enlightening than Ze Records' NY No Wave compilation, which came out the same year, 2003. Better liner notes on the Soul Jazz comp, too.)

Qualities

Tate , I am with you on the Soul Jazz NY Noise 1 compared to Zee's thing.
That they both came out in what felt like the heat of those reissues ,
Can guess that one will remain through the years and one will , well - fall away.
Dunno who did the Zee liner notes but they were just ok as I recall from scanning them -
once.
I've been asked to do the notes for Noise 3 , so will have to get it up for that.
It took some years to get together all the tracks for 3
and a couple 'unrereleased' cherries got picked in the meantime ,
but it still has stuff that none of the other late '70's -early '80's reissues had got .
A touch of anti -"No NY" attitude entered into my selection ,
kind of resent that B Eno was so easily led to not include some of the other downtown groups that he had originally been led to - but some of those groups are on Noise 1 & 2 so they got represented in the end.

Big Apple Rappin' looks good , there's a whole mine of cool funky fun stuff from that period
and they scooped up a good portion.

Well the ZE cd was not so bad, as they ultimately compiled just the Ze 'noise' material, so it's ok, just a label compilation. Anyway the reissue of Mutant Disco was spectacular.
Wish that Strut has not fall down, those two Disco Not Disco are gems i'm dearly proud to have, at the times i was so waiting for a volume 3!
Any thought about the SAW box?

i know a diff DB record than 11, but not that one.

nice to see UT in there. obv we're now steering into early Blast First territory with that and the Sonic Youth and the slight return of my/our seventeen year old tastes....

First Thought Best Thought

Disc: 1
1. Instrumentals 1
2. Instrumentals 2
3. Reach One

Disc: 2
1. Tower Of Meaning
2. Sketch For The Face Of Helen

AU1005CD.JPEG

"Before disco, and before the transcendent echoes, Arthur Russell wanted to be a composer. His journey began in 1972, leaving Iowa to study Indian classical composition with Ali Akbar Khan in Northern California and ending two years later in New York at the Manhattan School of Music. In that brief period Arthur met and worked with several musicians and poets that would guide his work throughout the remainder of the decade: Allen Ginsburg, Christian Wolff, Jackson MacLow, Rhys Chatham, Philip Glass, Elodie Lauten, and Ernie Brooks. First Thought Best Thought collects Arthur Russell's out of print instrumental and orchestral compositions along with over 45 minutes of previously-unreleased material on two CDs. Initially intended to be performed in one 48 hour cycle, 'Instrumentals' was in fact only performed in excerpts a handful of times as a work in progress. The legendary performances captured live in New York at The Kitchen and Franklin St. Arts Center include the cream of that era's downtown new music scene including Ernie Brooks, Rhys Chatham, Jon Gibson, Peter Gordon, Garrett List, Andy Paley, Dave Van Tiegham, and Peter Zummo. Included here is the previously unreleased 'Instrumentals' Vol. 1 along with 'Instrumentals' Vol. 2 that has been out of print for over twenty years. Originally released in 1984, sections of 'Instrumentals' Vol. 2 were incorrectly mastered at half speed, and have been now corrected for this compilation. 'Reach One' is one of Arthur's earliest compositions dating back to 1973. The hypnotic soundscape was written and performed for two Fender Rhodes pianos, and is previously unreleased. One of the holy grails in Arthur's discography, 'Tower Of Meaning' is a beautiful and stunningly moving orchestral work. Conducted by the late Julius Eastman, 'Tower Of Meaning' was originally released in a limited private edition of only 320 copies. 'Sketch For The Face Of Helen' shares only the same title as the previously released excerpt from 1981. Inspired by his work with friend and composer Arnold Dreyblatt, this previously unreleased version was recorded with an electronic tone generator, keyboard and ambient recordings of a rumbling tugboat from the Hudson River. First Thought Best Thought is an essential collection of the lost instrumental treasures from Arthur Russell's vast archive and brings the genius of his legacy closer into focus. Packaged with a 16-page color booklet + O-card of archival images and essays by former Modern Lover Ernie Brooks and Audika's Steve Knutson."

FRANCO BATTIATO: Fetus
label: WATER 168CD
"Franco Battiato moved into the 1970s on the crest of the progressive rock wave. This 1972 impossibly strange record inhabits that nether world of pop music, electronics, politics and experimental rock. Fetus is an album beyond all definition. It's a masterpiece of daring and wild risks that work every single time. Battiato takes us through eight uniquely super-detailed songs that tug at the heart strings as no other experimental record ever could. New liner notes by Jim O'Rourke."

B000E3LHY6.02.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

Fetus, the first Battiato LP, but the third and fourth ("Sulle corde di Aries" and "Click") are even better and, if italian singing can for someone be a little disturbing, mostly instrumental, less pop, more experimental and on a pair with the best krautrock albums. Indeed Fetus is anyway very strange....
