It doesn't worry the Tories the racism is part of the package. Some voters like it others are willing to hold their nose. It damages labour because one of the reasons we vote for them is that they're not supposed to be racist.

Exactly. I've talked about this before - the inherent disadvantage that faces parties that are progressive, or are supposed to be.

i didn't believe it until she denied it

Legend has it that LBJ, in one of his early congressional campaigns, told one of his aides to spread the story that Johnson's opponent fucked pigs. The aide responded "Christ, Lyndon, we can't call the guy a pigfucker. It isn't true." To which LBJ supposedly replied "Of course it ain't true, but I want to make the son-of-a-bitch deny it."

Imagine if someone had said the same thing about Corbyn:

"Mr Corbyn, is it true that you fire stones at squirrels?"
"I strongly oppose firing stones at *all* small mammals."
"Yes, but what about squirrels specifically?"
"I strongly oppose..."

It gets dirtier by the day. The Tories are apparently running ads on Google where they impersonate Labour.

Tories release 'fake' video of Jess Phillips as Labour launch General Election manifesto in Birmingham

The Tories have unleashed another "fake" video ahead of the 2019 General Election - and this time it involves a Birmingham MP.

The Conservative Party released a video of Jess Phillips "undermining Labour's manifesto". Ms Phillips appeared on Good Morning Britain on October 3 where she spoke about the "huge amount" of violent death threats she's received due to her Brexit position, reports the Mirror .

The Conservative Party's Twitter account released an altered version of the clip with the kicker "Labour manifesto to launch" to make it look like she was on the ITV show this morning. They captioned the clip: "MUST WATCH: Labour's Jess Phillips undermines Corbyn's manifesto by admitting they can't or won't deliver on their promises. With no clear plan for Brexit, Labour just can't deliver."

A slogan on the video reads: "Labour: Not sure we can deliver on our promises".

With Johnson at the helm and Cummings pulling the strings, they've basically gone full Trump now, haven't they?

I have little hope for the future when I read comments like this.

hope for what? the country is doing just fine.

people who go to food banks are low life’s who haven’t worked hard for anything in their lives. A lot are also immigrants who expect to come to this country and live for free living off the people who work hard for money and to grow this country. Homeless people ... put themselves into their current situations mostly as druggies or alcoholics. Everyone in this country is given a chance, it’s a easy country that’s why people come here.

I was going to say "Christ, where did you read that?", and then realised the answer could be "virtually anywhere".

bandz ahoy
I've been completely ignoring this.

Crazy, isn't it?

My only excuses: 1. I'm going to vote labour whatever 2. I believe the Tories will inevitably win, because life stinks

It reminds me of the American belief that capitalism only truly works, only attains it's full potential, when the forfeits are as great as the rewards. You need the carrot of wealth and the stick of poverty in its true sense or the motivations are not sufficiently intense. It's suffering that keeps the system honest and supplies it's power.

I've got a friend that lives in Vancouver and often travels to America for work and he says the change in atmosphere is palpable as soon as you cross the border. A wild feral desperation driven energy. He said he never grasped what hustle meant before going there. That hustling means doing everything you can to keep your head above water and it does breed a certain ingenuity and application.

It's linked to what I was saying on the capitalism thread that to establish capitalism first you must create total dependence on the market. Eliminate subsistence farming, enclose the commons, slaughter the bison, chop down the breadfruit trees.

totalise the system.

People have to be forced to work. Hobsbawn said factory owners had to make wages low enough that you could only make enough to live by working the hours they wanted you to work.

So at all times a kind of false scarcity is created by force. It's utterly dependent on this precondition.

And you have the desperately poor as a permanent moral example and a warning. Skid Row. You get a kind of mortal hell and heaven with capitalism. And you can see why Americans especially fear the socialist dismantlement of that whole moral superstructure.
