Just looked that up. Sounds pretty specialised. Christianity to Judaism is a bit like Buddhism to Hinduism. Both older religions wanted to claim the messiahs as their own, but they refused.

Been trying to read a book of poems/prose by Richard Skelton, about landscape. Really deathly boring. I need it read to me.

luka hates him.

I don't think it's unfair to say de lillo is one of the worst writers ever to use the english language. Dumb in such a typically american male way.

Underworld is by far and away the worst novel I've ever read.

See if you can find the opening page online. It's staggering. Nothing will ever be that bad again. It's a kind of degree zero.

I group it with Terrence Malick. A specifically American stupidity. impotent dry humping. Bathetic.

Is that the baseball one? I think I did read the first few pages after a friend's recommendation, but gave up early cos it was crap.

If you think he's a bad writer why are you reading Cosmopolis? Are you punishing yourself?

I've been meaning to read Ulysses for ages. luka made me read the first 50 pages or so a while back and I was into it, but I want to read The Odyssey first. I started the latter ages ago, read three or four chapters then got bored so I'm still in limbo with that.

It put me off drugs. Not taking them but prescribing them for other people. Turns out most people who take them just turn into flakes. Disgusting degenerates.

Why?

Currently reading The Star Diaries by Lem. It's a series of short stories about the adventures of an astronaut - his travels a basically a foil for Lem to construct this little absurdist universes, full of paradoxes i.e. the stuff that comes with time travel, planets entirely inhabited by robots, planets where everyone is forced to live a half aquatic life - drawing little lessons about humanity's stupidit, vanity etc. I found it annoying at first 'cos I picked it up hoping for something easy, and its quite densely written but I'm enjoying it now.

I've never been to festivals never been anywhere where there's a group of self consciously 'psychedelic' people before and it turns out they are grotesque delusional sad losers that must be eliminated

You should see the state of the occult scene.

One of my mates is a brilliant writer about occult stuff. He frequently finds the mismatch between his writing and the audience to be horrifically jarring.

I can easily imagine this. The slight advantage the psychedelic lot have is not thinking themselves lords of evil, sealing pacts with demons etc. But it's much of a muchness.
