Stuff You Ate

Well I'm a fan of offal when done nicely - it's usually the mark of a good rerstaurant.

Kokoretsi is one of my favourite Greek dishes. A good taverna would have it but it's probably best to ask beforehand. Apparently it's made of:

# Guts of lamb. You might need guts from more than one lamb. Ask for 2 hearts, 2 spleen, liver and 1 lungs, 2 testicles
# Bowels (intestines) of lamb. At least 4 are required for a medium size kokoretsi

which raw looks like this:

Mayeritsa is another interesting dish... I like how this site is fine on calling sweetbread testicles but calls eyes "lights"

I think English cuisine does a good line in offal. There is/was a good pub restaurant in Sydney which did a black pudding well along with kidneys and battered lamb's brain.

I've tried chicken feet at Yum Cha - not really my thing. Maybe I should try again though. Same with congee.

What's with 100 year old eggs? Anyone tried them?

Snails I've tried - not bad - and I love stuff like octopus and lobster.

Many people seem to blanch at oysters but I love them.

1000 year old eggs are totally gross, as are duck's tongues. The Chinese really do my head in, they cook the best food in the world and then come up with...ducks tongues. They really look like ducks tongues that have been ripped out and all, and I'm not squeamish..

Duck tongues

I ordered some of these over lunch at a Chinese place in Queensway. Not completely repulsive by any means, quite moreish really. Maybe it was just the sauce that was moreish. But no, I'll never order them again. To much tendon, too tonguey.

A Large Big Mac meal. It was toxic. Must not do that again.

that's horrific.

hey, does anyone know the name of a vegetable that looks broccoli-ish but has fractal cones instead of bushy sprouts? i saw it about a year ago at the market, it was so perfectly geometric it gave me the chills.

its actually a cauliflower, totally delicious called a chou romanesco. very nice nutty flavour and yes naturally fractal.

has anyone here had camargue red rice, again linked as it tastes really nutty, and it's a deep red colour, needs special cooking attention.

you could create a quite a psychedelic dinner with one of those and something else. maybe that should be hesten blumentals new project. i had crocodile steak once which has some quite trippy chemicals in it, followed by wildebeaste and some absinthe with a cobra stewing in it in this restaurant, for valentines day, seems to specialise in mad food: http://archipelago-restaurant.co.uk/menus.html like the food equivalent of martin denny.

i came out after all that and i was hallucinating a little.

mcdonalds food doesen't look right (as food).

i once ate at burger king daily for about a month, though, in a self-destructive spirit.. i felt groggier but that's about it, it was actually quite decent (by fast food standards).

i worked at kfc whilst i was a student, it was students and completely crazy people there, within a couple of weeks of working there the manager had run away to america with 12 grands takings to go to america to get plastic surgery on his eyes!
Anyway the unsold chicken was a godsend for the people i shared the house with, which i took back every night i worked there, i've got kfc to thank for getting me thru university in several ways, even though the chicken is probably from henious sources.

mms, you need to watch l'amerique interdite (THIS IS AMERICA PART 2), a mondo film showing the horrors of chicken farms and other distinctly american (you know europeans would never do this sort of thing) aberrations, you'll be amused.

my theory is that if it looks nasty, don't eat it. so that would rule out kfc.

i'm feeling an intense desire to cook an animal intact, or just the head, the important thing is that it stares back and can be recognised as an animal. it's the next step, i suppose!

The vegetable in question goes by the ornate name of Romanesque Brocolli

Why it's so called, I have no idea.
