not sure if I agree completely with the old adage - that a painting (and perhaps by extension all creative projects) is never finished, and only stops at interesting places.

I think every project reaches, can reach, should reach, a zenith, a saturation point, a perfect place where everything comes together, utilizing the elements to maximize it's power or subtlety; whatever the work is supposed to do, at this point, it does it best, most efficiently, and most effectively.

and any further work on it makes it look or sound over-worked and dead.
