these films might be the tail end of the 70's and may not be garish enough for what your looking for but check out Straight Time and Rolling Thunder.

I have a friend who used to stream a lot of grindhouse/sleaze/midnight/exploitation stuff online so I've become somewhat well-versed in the stuff, and have become something of a collector (was just out in the American South recently and turns out, in addition to having fucking incredible record selection, and prices, out there, there's all kinds of obscuro stuff floating around record/collector/used shops - for instance, grabbed VHS copies of Prisoners of the Lost Universe - described on the box as "mystical science fantasy", Virtual Encounters - some '90s cyber-themed softcore movie that I just had to grab for the cover, and Cherry 2000, which takes place in the "loveless, lawless society of the year 2017")

I def lean towards the trippier, absurd, or more sci-fi stuff, where my buddy is more into the usual slasher and sleaze, but if a flick is bad enough it can be pretty entertaining whatever the genre... I'm kinda into bad movies personally, but am mostly interested in things for the style and vibe

I'd recommend looking for the 42nd Street Forever series, compilations of old grindhouse trailers. there's some amazing stuff in there and it might point you in the right direction. and there are a couple torrent clubs/forums where you can start to dig for the more obscure titles. look for any hippie horror stuff like The Shiver of the Vampires. women really had the perfect look around '70/'71 btw, Christina Lindberg (who was in They Call Her One Eye) and Soledad Miranda are all time I think

as far as something to go with James Ferraro-type stuff... def Class of Nuke 'Em High, which immediately came to mind when I first heard Night Dolls With Hairspray. it's pretty much a movie version of that album:

Future-Kill is pretty incredible, aesthetically-speaking, has that futuristic metal/punk barbarians set to a dark synth soundtrack thing going (the beginning of the trailer looks like some lame Revenge of the Nerds ripoff but just wait for it):

and a personal fav, Boardinghouse, a hilarious snapshot of early-'80s Southern California, directed by and starring this overly-tanned, blonde cheeseball - with lots of self-indulgent scenes of him working out in speedos (with pointless zooms on his crotch) and meditating, and a bunch of dippy, coke-snorting New Age fitness bimbos staying at his place who take turns jumping into bed with him. oh and there's some monster/slasher stuff too, but the hero defeats that with psychic powers, or something. good luck finding this one though:

Sometimes around here I think I'm, like, in some kinda slacker film, y'know? Like...where dudes sit around all day and night watching trash...

thanks for the list above. will have to track down that 42nd Street series - looks like a lot of fun! i forgot about Troma. as much as i like that stuff aesthetically i find it hard to sit through though. other films you could slot in the 'Ferraro' camp would be things like Liquid Sky and any Rinse Dream film imo.

personally i'm looking for films that are made for the cheap thrill Grindhouse market, but at the same time it's as if the director is trying to escape or fiddle the market by producing his own uncompromising vision of what might be high art given the right set of circumstances. i favour this juxtaposition of producer pressure (titty shots, ultraviolence etc) vs the directors personal creative vendetta. hope that makes sense, .

You seen this Dave?

Sweet bloody Jesus. I guess the intention was to make a hardcore porn film. But they flipped out somewhere, and the truck flipped out with them. Rich borrowed it off our friend Steve. I truly have never seen anything quite like it. I think Steve said lots of avant-garde/arthouse films are just really pornos, but this is one of few pornos where the opposite is true.

i seem to remember trying to track down this film sometime ago when Rich recommended it upthread. sounds great.

really like both of these, but yeah, they're a bit more blunt than what i'm thinking of.

thanks for the list, chris. i definitely want to see future kill, virtual encounters, and cherry 2000 + will check out 42nd street...the others, i guess i should have specified the ferraro i'm thinking of is more the drone end...on air, clear, last american hero, rather than his campier side. though i don't mind a bit of camp. liquid sky is probably closer to what i'm thinking of than class of nuke em high. i don't know any rinse dream stuff but it looks along those lines as well. that perma-nocturnal sensuous thing is pretty central as far as what i'm looking for.

also i couldn't make it through through the looking glass, though i'd like to try again. it's so nightmarish.

I'll definitely be seeking out Liquid Sky, and am pretty interested in digging up more atmospheric dramas/thrillers like Body Double now (although, yeah, I think a lot of giallo films, esp anything Argento, is going to often have that feel/look).

the best place to find extremely rare Grindhouse and Midnight Movies, atmospheric dramas, forgotten made-for-TV-movies, out-of-print-Arthouse, cheese and sleaze, deranged psychedelia, Turkish Sci Fi, Cult, and bizarre vintage porn would be Cinemageddon, a members-only torrent club. membership is full atm, and I'd send invites to a some of you if it weren't for the fact that I actually lost mine, because I didn't have enough time to seed to keep up a good share ratio... but usually new spots open up here and there (don't let the front page scare you off, that's just their kind of sense of humor, I guess). then there's also Vintage Erotica Forums, where I managed to find a few of the titles listed above

nochexxx, looked into Rinse Dream and managed to find a couple films. wow.

would be curious to see Through the Looking Glass too, because anything involving Jamie Gillis in the '70s is usually going to be pretty out-there

Body Double was stupid, but i did enjoy it, especially when the lead dude randomly transformed into a porno director. the bachelor pad location made me think of Silent Running :D.

Recently watched some late period Argento (Phenomena, The Black Cat and Opera). All of which had their good and bad moments I must be a lot easier to please these days.

don't know who Jamie Gillis is, anything else worth watching?

There's an obituary for Jamie Gillis here, plus an interview transcript on Susie Bright's website, who is always worth reading.

haha, it is stupid. but i love the atmosphere, def. the sci-fi bachelor pad. the predominance of night. and yeah the weird porn subplot.

also checked out cafe flesh, which was amazing. and pretty hot, for all its quirkiness.

thanks Danny! the article was excellent and the blog looks brilliant. interesting there's
a Roger 'Mahler' connection - i favour The Last House on Dead End Street.

another actor who i seem to be crossing paths with a lot is David Hess (Last House on the Left, The House on the Edge of the Park). must have something to do with me seeking out films with 'house' or 'last' in the title. :slanted:

I found NightDreams, which is alternately terrifying and hilarious, and Cafe Flesh, which I haven't gotten around to downloading yet, but I'm def looking forward to that one.

can't remember the names of the better, more surreal Gillis movies one of my buddies streamed, will have to do some research there

incidently, a friend recently tipped me off to these gorgeous and psychedelic old AT&T and Bell Laboratories films:

God that last AT&T film is something else, nice one Chris.

Also check out Thundercrack for 'real' film with porn, never been bettered that one I don't think. Marion Eaton, I love you, and your cucumber.

Love that film. I've read that it is something of a jump-off point for David Lynch's Mulholland Drive, picking up from the auto accident. DePalma is just delicious in an alcohol-soaked lysergic cheesecake way.

Surprised to see the mention of Cafe Flesh on this board, but I remember that being interesting. Not to hopelessly derail the thread but the original New Wave Hookers is the high point in the genre - the Plugz soundtrack is amazing!

Anyone know anything about the British Postal films - the ones scripted by Auden, and scored by Britten? I haven't tried googling much yet. Just read about them last night.
