What is the Best Newspaper?

I think the Star is the best tabloid. (sorry stelfox!)
I think the Guardian is the best broadsheet but the Times has better news coverage, so maybe its better, its a lot uglier, and i like pretty things. Everything else is shit especially the Independent which is more like a comic.

but most of the time i don't like reading newspapers becasue they#re all shit really and quite boring. I'd rather watch TV.i'm not interested in current affairs or politics or economics though so who am i to talk?

of the UK broadsheets I prefer

Guardian for sport, Times for comment, Indie for obits and reviews, Telegraph for music.

Roughly. Indie and Times lose points for horrible web design.

yeah i can't stand the independent. its the worst of both words: the smug self-satisfaction of a broadsheet, and the lack of interest in actually presenting news (and presenting it reasonably objectively) of a tabloid.

when i see just about every student here reading it, i'm filled with loathing for my generation.

or may be i'm just being unfair.

Telegraph for music

surely not ;0

that execrable u2 fellating twat, smug nonsense about how we should be very happy because of british music selling again, classical reviews that might have been archive reprints from the 30s 'vaughn williams, splendid, rich, colourful'

and so forth
although there was a piece about bach a few months ago by iwan hewett? which i thought was good

i like the obituaries in the telegraph though

Yeah, they're not perfect, but they stick their necks out more than the rest - Stelfox's DJ Screw in there a while back impressed me, and their grime coverage has been a bit more intelligent than some. On the whole I just seem to see more things covered in there that don't get a mention in the other three broadsheets.

The obits are well-written - probably the most enjoyable on the whole - but they don't include date or place of death as a rule which professionally annoys me (part of my job involves keeping an eye out for musician deaths), and the Indie include more musicians.

absurd as it is to think a broadsheet will cover music to the satisfaction of anyone likely to be posting here, i do agree there is at least a sense of naive enthusiasm in the telegraph's coverage that elevates it above alexis petridis and the like.

no use for a witticism
all papers are crap for music.

FACT!

all the broadsheets are good for news in their own way.

i also like the mirror and the mail (grew up reading it).

does it for me

all uk papers are a useless waste of time, esp the guardian  , i stopped reading them long ago, (apart from jobs page), use the internet instead where you get all the extremes of news unfit for print.

which is to say:
in terms of actual news; if you read the grunter or the indie after you've been unlucky enough to browse thru the times or torygraph then you notice that at least 3/4 of the stories are exactly the same, if you compare the sun to the times you see exactly the same stories, just shorter with different font, they are after all sister papers from the same stable. all the journalists obviously follow the same circlejerk schedule round the 'top stories' of the day, then write em up using the same inverted pyramid format with a back story at the bottom that will often be almost word-for-word identical.
reporting of stories follows a fixed agenda throughout all the papers, so only stories that portray say arabs or asylum seekers in a negative light are reported on, even if the guardian reports them in a superficially PC way - i mean even the fucking daily mail stick with political correctness, but choose only to feature stories of reflecting their agenda of fear, hatred and misery..... :(

on most issues the papers are on an anti-life trip that i find bad for my mental health and i don't want to be disinformed thankew

Depends on why you are reading papers - if you are reading them just to confirm
your own strongly hold views on politics or for music then you are probably better off
reading webstuff or specialist magazines (mind you - you can "read" the NME in 15 minutes, it's more like Hello magazine these days is it not?)

On average I read a couple of brodsheets a day and the ES+whatever is floating
around on my commute (Express or The Sun seems to be the ones left behind?).

And I mean read - even the obituaries if they look of interest.

I find myself skipping the sport more often. Although I will make an effort if Simon Barnes in The Times has something. His piece on Ben Johnnson's 100m in the Olympics was a masterclass in sports writing. Simon Jenkins in The Guardian/The Sunday Times and sometimes The Evening Standard is worth catching.

Broadsheets: The Times is my favourite. Omnipresent (no other paper would have a piece on Mike Modano (ice hockey player) and overall they have the best writers. The Times had a brilliant piece on why Iraq should be split in three - very early on in the war: I think by some ex-Clinton advisor. It made sense when I read it (it was the first one mentioning Lawrence's plans which were similar), and it makes even more sense now. The Times also had pieces on Uzbekistan long before all hell broke loose (and Craig Murray was sent home).

Then is sequence The Observer, Guardian, FT on weekends, Indie and the Torygraph.

The Daily Express/Mail are just depressing whenever I find one on the train.
What is the point of these? The red tops similar - but at least a bit of fizz in
headline writers (Sun).

The Evening Standard - well I live in London suburbia so it is useful (but not a great
paper).

All the broadsheets have good and bad. At one time or another they all have good features, on music, politics etc. But they all now put in stuff as news that just isn't news: fashion, Hello-style celebrity tat, Pete n' Kate, and basically local stories blown up beyond reason. I used to have the Times delivered, so read it every day but got so tired of it we decided to get the Torygraph instead.

To me the Guardian is probably the best overall (I know folks on here seem to hate Alexis Petridis but there's not much better among the other papers).

The Evening Standard is utter, utter shite. And Metro (free morning rag in London area, produced by Daily Mail/Evening Standard) is even worse.

I get most of my info from the net these days, live and raw, so a newspaper is just something to read when I'm having breakfast.

On the net - straight news: bbc
music: blissblog, dissensus (naturally), well, you all know (see Woebot's recent list ...)
general politics: harry's place
UK politics: politicalbetting.com, order-order.com

the best (i.e. the only good) music reviews in a newspaper is the sunday times magazine, for which the comedian stewart lee writes. but to be honest i really don't understand why people on this board pay so much attention to mainstream music coverage, as it is always awful.

International Herald Tribune. Washington Post. New York Sun (har har).

All British papers are hopeless. I'm too young to know if this is entirely due to Murdoch, or was always the case.

sometimes
the guardian gets more annoying the older i get, plus it's demographic seems to be not me at all, it's for people that earn more and are more neurotic than me,but somehow both younger and older at the same time, there are a couple of journalists i like, but overall it seems to written by completley confused people. the sport is good tho.
the times has better features but on arts it's useless and it seems to get scoops that turn out to be bullshit quite often.
the evening standard, londons paper seems to just be written from the point of view of a average kensington resident, it's completley awful. The indie is good on books etc, often some good stuff and they were the only paper apart from the mirror who didn't support the war.
the financial times weekend supplements are good. i like the new scientist best but thats not a paper.

i love the star. my approach is to read them all online now, that way you can pick and choose the writers you like not be stuck with one piece in a paper, the rest of which you don't want to read. out of all the broadsheets, theres a decent composite newspaper to be made
