hard one really most hip hop really from 84 -87 used 808 drums, probably the most celebrated examples are mantronix - cold gettin dumb is particulary good, early def jam, eric b and rakim - paid in full etc, but you're asking for rather alot as it was pretty much the drum sound of choice for alot of early hip hop

t la rock's "it's yours" and run dmc's "peter piper" have prominent 808s. the t la rock track was a big influence on the miami sound which ended up influencing the dirty south thing.

yeah t-la is wicked personally i'd always go for the remix on the 12" of breakin bells by omar santana , it's got the 808 and lots of wicked editing - also rock the bells of course - ll cool j - any track with bells in the title ;)
also on the bay area tip too shorts born to mack but more or less cos it's got one of the best covers ever.

just a silly aside: in 1993 or 1994 the source did a miami bass special issue and one new york reader was so perturbed that he vomitted on a copy and mailed it back to them.

Is there a picture of that anywhere? I neeeeeeeeeeeed to see it! Seriously. That's one of the most beautiful things, if you or anyone got one please?

Pump that Bass is OK but Can You Feeeeeeeeeel It? by Original Concept is the one for me for that pure 808 hit of bass. dum dum tccccccch dum dum tccch, wicked. Did Scoolly D use an 808?

yeah i think he used sa variety of things but he was also one of the first people i can think of - (im probably not right here but) to have a dj who cut in samples and scratch in breaks.
my fave thing by him i think is am i black enough for you which was a bit later.

schoolly d was mostly a 909 user.

papwheelie's list doesn't leave much to say....

Morocco Moe - Task - 808 scratching and a kraftwerk sample
Fila Fresh Crew - I Hate To Go To Work
Derrik Smith & Coolio Creme - Street Rhymes
Egyptian Lover - What Is A DJ If He Can't Scratch
D4 - Tearing It Up
Magnetic Force - Hip Hop Bystander
Rapp Mechanix - Rapp Mechanic
Def Soul - Addicted To Rap
Ninja Crew - We Destroy
Brothers Supreme - We Can't Be Held Back
Twilight22 - Siberian Nights
Newcleus - Jam On It
Two Fresh - Rapping Man
Rodney O - Everlasting Bass
Bum MCs - Maniacs

and why hasn't anyone said
SOULSONIC FORCE - PLANET ROCK - the daddy of 808 rap!

Thanks, I was never sure what he used, *Jam On Revenge* is my fave from Newcleus. Also anything by Whodini early on I reckon, Haunted House of Rock n Mr Magic n all that shit. The Streetsounds Electro compilations covered some great stuff, for reference to actually get some of the above stuff...and yeah, Planet Rock/Perfect beat/Play At Your Own risk major omissions...

I wrote that JahSonic piece of course. I copied that list I left from taht JahSonic/ElectroEmpire piece, which was constructed from my collection.

I can't say anything about the Source piece on Bass, but the much of the Grand Royal issue was written by my cahooter Dave Tompkins.

The general attitude towards Miami Bass has done a 180 since the late 90's. Notice that Grand Royal had to open with a discalimer...but then again, generation Y has come of age since then, and they weren't part of the Hip-Hop vs. Bass mentality from 1989>.
