Another in an apparently continuing series of texture-matched, heavily-layered mixes. This one was done very quickly: tracks picked, sequenced, meshed, tweaked in one evening. Intentionally threw in some probably Dissesnsus-dissmissed pop acts (Radiohead, Wilco, Dirty Three, et al) instead of going more predictably avant/ambient; but also a lot of the usual staples in my mixing diet (Meters, Arthur Russell, Can, Reich, Eno). I guess if you listened via speakers without paying a lot of attention, a sort of "spine" of "songs" (as contrasted with "pieces") stand out, so that it can listened to like an unmixed pop collection. But with headphones, or in the dark, or with any real attention paid, I hope the lines between the songs and the pieces get blurred a little, so that ambient/composed becomes fused, texture/melody become enmeshed, rhythm/flow coalesce.

Look for a mix into which a lot more effort went via Droid+Slug's ambitious, international, fortnightly 'Blogariddims' project, on 11 September. It'll likely be guest-blogged on Weareie blog, but it'll download to you automatically if you sign up for the B'riddims podcast, which I'd recommend. Great stuff so far, and what's coming looks just as top-shelf.

This looks like another very interesting mix. Looking forward to giving at listen... might even concentrate on it in the dark and everything :p

loving this - looking forward to the new one via blogaridim.

I like the way you re-contextualise the familiar, also the way in which you allow some tracks to come through, relatively, clear and others which are layered and treated.

A genuine treat.

Thanks!

Mixing "songs"/vocal/pop music in this way means you can't really evenly mesh elements (or not very easily--I think I managed it a few times on the forthcoming b'riddims mix). So I kinda embraced that on this one, and tried to mix it to where you could concentrate on the "ether" of sound, or let it wash over and focus on the "songs". Partly a result of putting this one together really fast, not spending time on track selection beforehand.

Well, I've listened to it now, really enjoyed it. have to admit I wasn't listening in the dark with my full attention

I normally *can't stand* old school funk/soul like The Meters/Marvin Gaye (I appreciate that I'm utterly wrong in this blanket dislike, the music is high class but the vocals just don't do it for me at all), but mashed in gently with everything else it just worked... a few moments of groove amid the otherwise trippy was pretty cool.
The Meters and Marvin jarred with me a at first when they came up through the mix but went away quickly enough for me to think "damn, that was alright" without getting too upset :) Context is everything I guess!

Very much appreciated the Robert Wyatt, inspired me to go and find some more of his records.

Generally I really liked the richness with which this was put together there's something extremely cool about putting together so many layers and rendering them so minimal...

Now looking forward to the Blogariddims mix a lot.

Thanks!
