waiting for a time
Hope you'll excuse the new boy bumping up a tired old thread here...

Has anyone on here read Alan Moore's 'Lost girls' book? - you know, the pornagraphic one that he did with his girlfriend:eek::eek:

You can't get hold of it in England as far as I know, apparently because some of the characters in it are underage or something. It all sounds slightly dodgy, but this is ALAN MOORE we're talking about here, not some sensationalist pervy schlock-merchant.

Watchmen, From Hell and the League of extraordinary gentlemen are my top three comics ever...

Drawings of what appears to be minors engaging in sexual acts are not illegal in the UK yet.

There is move to make them so - http://www.homeoffice.gov.uk/documents/cons-2007-depiction-sex-abuse

I've no idea if Alan Moore's book does contain such images - if it does though, you could be prosecuted in the US in theory for possessing it, depending on whether the court agreed with you that Alan Moore's work has serious literary or artistic value:

STN's answer seems more plausible I think...

Re: Incal, just stay away from the follow up volumes where it deals with John Difool's childhood... clearly only done for rent money.

almost got this the other day but the drawings look... really weird? i should probably look past that or at least be open to a new aesthetic.

been down with a stupid sinus infection for a ridiculous 2 weeks and have been getting back into comix..

my first time reading the ACME novelty Library stuff...

man. amazing mood. so depressing. i just get this heavy feeling... like the sun is out, and birds are singing, and all you can think about is killing yourself.

also Black Hole
story.jpg

really shockingly good too. like Lynch meets Bataille meets Junji Ito.

and speaking of Junji Ito...

also about to dip into the Invisibles, Moore's From Hell, Bootlegg Babiez, Flex Mentallo, Preacher, Promethea, Transmetropolitan... damned sinus infection won't go away but I'm kind of enjoying a little nerdy sabbatical from the world...

Could not get in to Black Hole. It just seemed bloated and boring, full of non-surprises.

I'm really not into comics at all, I find them very hard to read for some reason. But, I'm willing to be convinced, where should I start? I've read the odd thing such as Watchmen and From Hell (enjoyed both of them), Ghost World (ok but basically nothing to it) and a few other bits. Thought about reading The Invisibles but I looked at something from the series in a shop and I just thought it looked ugly. I watched this film Baba Yaga recently and it's based on drawings by some guy called Crepax - looked him up and it seems his stuff could be up my street, anyone know much about him? Also another guy who was quite similar called Manara or something, what's he like?

Depends which volume you read. The first volume had the best writing, but the worst art. The second volume had great art and great writing. The third volume had good and bad art and good writing.

I don't know a great deal about comics really, but I went through a big phase of reading em last year because my housemate's such a big fan. I enjoyed these;

The Preacher series - absolutely hilarious

League of extraordinary gentlemen (esp. vol 2)- Possibly Alan Moore's best? Don't be put off by the film.

Love and Rockets - Very peculiar Garcia Marquez-style magic realism

Joe Sacco's 'Palestine', the Bosnia one and 'Its only Rock n roll'

Maus - Everyone should read this. A genuine masterpiece

But at the minute I can't be arsed with comics for some reason so I don't have any more recent recommendations.

I should start at the beginning though shouldn't I? I'd really hate starting something in the middle. Often though I hear about something having really good drawings and then I see it and I don't like it. On top of that I find them difficult to read even if I do like the pictures.

Oh yeah, I read some of that, seemed pretty good but I didn't read enough to really get into it.

"Joe Sacco's 'Palestine'"
Read that as well, enjoyed it.

Read a bit of that round someone's house once, maybe I should persevere, everyone in the world seems to have it on their shelves anyway.

What about Crepax? Anyone know anything?

All good recommendations. Transmet (by Warren Ellis -- another very talented UK comic writer) is also well worth reading.

Haven't actually read this, but are you sure? Better than V for Vendetta, From Hell and The Watchmen...?

Well I started reading volume 2, because that's what was on the shelves when I noticed it. That said, you should really start with the first volume. I think it's worth sticking with, despite the rather rubbish art, but if you're not into comics or technoccult / cyber punk mish-mashes-of-every-counter-culture-trope-you-can-think-of, it's probably not worth it.

"Better than V for Vendetta"
Everyone seems to love it but isn't it only 'cause of good memories of reading it as a kid? When I read it I thought it was very simplistic and childish.

See, that bit sounds good.

Ha -- maybe it is. I've not read it in a fair while, but I do remember enjoying it a great deal. Sometimes simple is good, especially when it comes to comics. But then, I like reading super hero stuff as well.

See, that bit sounds good.

You'll probably like it then. I just tried to list the influences (as I see them), but it would take too long. Suffice to say, it introduced me to a lot of books.

Yes, I think I am sure as crazy as it sounds. You start off thinking its just another above average romp, but then it really starts pushing back boundaries. There's one particular scene in vol 2 where Hyde gets his revenge on the invisible man that just made my jaw drop.

And not a single caption in sight

Transmetroplitan - Read the first volume of this. Very very dense (almost inpenetratable to begin with), but definitely worth the perseverance. It just throws you into this dystopian future city without any prior explanation at all, so that you really need to read it twice to take it all in properly. I'd like to read more of these.

Wow -- will have to get hold of that.

Slightly OT: I remember watching a TV show about religion last year. It featured Alan Moore talking about why he worships a statue of a small-ish snake. Weird but funny.

I'm currently rereading League of Extraordinary Gentlemen Vol 1, fun stuff. I'll hopefully get Vol. 3 soon, it must not be sold outside of the US for some weird copyright reasons and apparently retailers are pretty strict about this, but someone I know is about to score copy for me, yay.

Others I recently read and enjoyed:

I reckon the Guardian's got it locked down for daily strips with Doonesbury and of course Steve Bell. He's a genius.
