Where should I eat in London?

Ness Rowlah

Norwegian Wood
Mooli's on Frith Street, Soho if you need a quick bite when in central-London.

Sorry, being super-lazy (but I have to work til midnight, so I feel vindicated!), but can anyone recommend anywhere nice/bit unusual near London Bridge/Borough where I could take the girlfriend tomorrow evening...?

Thanks in advance...:)

Depends how much you want to spend. There's a fair few nice place but mostly quite pricey.

I really like the Blueprint Cafe in the design Museum. Modern British stuff, A la carte can be ££ but they usually have a good 2 courses for £20 thing going on. Review here.

Zucca is a good italian place which is about £10 a main.

More is kind of a Mediterranean/Greek place. Eaten there a couple of times and its always been nice.

Constancia is fantastic if she's not veggie, it's pure steaks more or less, a coupla pork dishes

http://www.constancia.co.uk/

Really nice atmosphere, you probably wanna book, we had to wait an hour cos it's only got like 15 covers or something. Nice people and nice staff, not the usual yahs that there can be around Borough. We had the mixed grill thing which is crazy value for money and it has the Provolone cheese, which I'd never had before and was JUST THE BEST THING I'VE EVER EATEN IN MY LIFE. It was like a mistersloane dream dish, it's toasted cheese without the toast but it tastes like blue cheese. I didn't actually eat any of the grill after I'd had it, it was that good. I would go back and just eat that as a starter and that as a main course, and I'd die a happy man.

There's meant to be quite a good Indian near Borough Market and just on Tooley street there's a Peruvian place that I've always wanted to try. There's a really posh place on Bermondsey Street if you want to do the dress up and go out sort of thing

http://www.thedelfina.co.uk/images/restaurant_menu.pdf

but I've not been dressed enough to eat there yet. It looks nice though if you like that sort of thing. I kinda do now and again. Guinea fowl looks nice.

Cheers guys - so many options! The Argentinian restaurant looks fabulous, but her Latin American obsession doesn't extend to eating red meat, sadly.....

have tried the Peruvian place, ages ago! Actually, maybe I haven't - there's the one on the street behind Tooley St, whatever it's called, and then the Colombian next to/underneath the pool hall on Tooley St...

May well plump for Zucca - good vegetarian and fish, and then can pop in the Rose for a pint on the way back to the station :)

I'd second that as well, me n the Doc had some great food there, totally forgotten about that place.

Actually went to Leon - the one on the Strand - for the first time the other day. Slightly smug vibe, but decent food for fairly sensible money given the location. Definitely handy as "grab something to eat before doing something else" type places.

Posted this in a separate thread, scottdisco wisely suggested i ask here as well...

the misses and i will be in london on our anniversary in june. we're staying with friends/family for the week but want to be on our own at a hotel on the actual anniversary night. anyone have any suggestions for a cool place to stay? while i wouldn't say price is *no* object, it's a special occasion so we don't mind splurging a bit. and any suggestions on a nice special occasion-worthy restaurant?

for both hotel and restaurant, we favor cool places over those that are just posh, but they can be a little upscale.

thanks!

my friend works with hotels in London all the time - will ask her suggestion....

as to the general thread (not ideal for an anniversary dinner!), had foie gras toasties and haggis toasties at the Canton Arms on South Lambeth Road on Sat - so, so wrong; so,so right.

I always wanted to stay at the Rookery, just cos it looks nice, I always used to recommend Hazlitts to people who wanted a bit of nice* :

but I'm sure bab's friend will have better suggestions.

Marcus Wareing is meant to be the best posh restaurant in town, haven't been tho :

If you like a good steak here is great :

Nice vibe, relaxed, great cocktails.

Everyone seems to like the Bistrotheque - buzzy, vibey - but again haven't been :

*should also say that I couldn't possibly afford to stay there, which is kinda why I recommended it, experience-by-proxy!

Let's Talk About Ceps
I rate the Cafe Rouge places quite highly; for a chain, they look nice and have a proper restaurant-y atmosphere. The food's good too - sometimes excellent - and it doesn't break the bank. At least some of them do really good lunchtime offers, I seem to recall.

Edit: sorry, just thinking aloud, that wasn't a suggestion for Leo's swank anniversary meal!

I stayed in The Rookery with my wife for an anniversary - very interesting place - decor etc, great bathroom. downside is that it's quite noisy outside what with all the clubbers, market workers etc. Also breakfast is extra which seems a bit mean.

Stayed in The Hoxton this year for her birthday - really enjoyed it - great vibe, lovely rooms, free wifi etc breakfast good and reasonable price.

rip this joint please
now that i think on Leo's query, heard a good report about Goya near Pimlico tube from a foodie mate (that's central, v near Westminster).

decent Spanish restaurant, then i checked out the restaurant website and well, it's clearly not overly swanky, to be fair

i suppose if you're both meat-eaters and don't mind a little adventurousness, then the quintessentially British St John has a lot of interesting ingredients, posh ways of serving up offal, etc, their original restaurant has a Michelin star, there's also the cheaper St John Bread and Wine (website for both eateries).

views from Oxo at Harvey Nics are supposed to be quite nice, food looks modish brasserie, my brother took his better half there once, two thumbs up from them

i suppose if you're coming to Britain what better thing to do than stay next to a pub? (well a boutique hotel by a posh pub, where the Fox and Anchor comes in...)

i know it's hard to mess up this typically French dish so perhaps not saying much T but i was genuinely overjoyed w my toulouse sausage, puy lentils i had in a Manc Rouge not so long ago, so i would join you here.

also they always manage to not mess up the creme brulees.

Plus if anyone asks what you did on your anniversary, you get to say that you took your wife up the Oxo Tower! (Mr Tea to thread!*)

What's that really similar place - Bistrotheque, or something? That's good for steak-frites. Then again, how difficult can it be?

so many interesting suggestion, thanks! btw, my wife isn't keen on red meat but does eats fish and some chicken. and veg, of course. she also has to stay away from garlic, which makes most indian, italian and korean food difficult. i'll eat anything.
