Where should I eat in London?

"When super-restaurateur Alan Yau gets in on the kebab act, it’s clear they’re no longer the sole preserve of late-night boozehounds. His newly opened Babaji Pide may specialise in Turkish flatbread, but succulent, spiced kofta kebabs also take pride of place. Kebabs are the latest junk food to receive the gourmet treatment: witness Lokkanta in Westbourne Grove, an upscale takeaway and diner where the design is chic and the Turkish kebabs smoky and fine. Or Clerkenwell’s Chifafa which avoids foam cartons and features ingredients such as high-welfare English veal. Coming soon is Berber & Q from chef Josh Katz, promising kebabs influenced by the grills of Istanbul. Move over, burgers: it’s kebabs’ turn in the spotlight."

FWIW, the comments threads on Guardian food articles are like the food equivalent of the ILM thread - there aren't many places on the internet where you get quite so many slightly dense people being huffily self righteous about things that they've basically missed the point of. Car-crash reading.

I mean, FFS, you wonder that no-one up in Dalston or Harringay thought to be "influenced by the grills of Istanbul" what with actually being from Turkey and stuff...

I suppose if we're talking about places in Westbourne Grove and Clerkenwell then at least they can't be accused of gentrification.

And most kinds of kebabs associated with Turkey come from the east of the country anyway.

Darned cockwombles.
Went to Ya Hala next to Paddington Station this evening. Well worth knowing about if ever in the area - better Lebanese meze than any I've had on nearby Edgware Road

i can name several excellent places to get turkish kebabs without it being some boring posh version.

castle kebabs in elephant and castle for one.

best turkish kebabs in london for my money.

if you want trinidadian food, you cant really beat roti joupa in clapham

not sure how i feel about english people serving up non english foods. my only reservation would be that it cuts in on business for people from those countries. and people might see it as 'superior' to the cheaper, less posh versions. if theyre doing something different with it, (combining it with something else, etc), then i suppose that's fine.

Went chilli cool didn't rate. Very sweet, no heat, no seed in the chilli, no nothing.

I'm looking for somewhere new to go with a veggie - any suggestions? Doesn't have to be fully meat-free but not eg Hawksmoor or anything.

Preferably a bit occasion-y but not fayn dayning, preferably fairly central.

Cheers

I like going to shanghai blues. Not fashionable but good and feels posh enough when they're not understaffed
(I'm a lifelong vegetarian btw)
They've got an affordable st clair sauvingnon blanc from new Zealand I'm in love with too

Thanks!

Ippudo looks like it could be an option actually.

Abeno showed up in the early days of this thread, didn't it? Also a good option, though.

We went to Bao in the end. Very good steamed buns. Not taking the piss with the prices. Some queueing required even on a Monday night.

Limited but nice. Daikon cake bao, sweet potato tempura chips, a couple of things involving cavolo nero or enoki mushrooms and preserved eggs.

Edit: Alison's not a big eater and was pretty happy. It does kind of feel like the meat options are the main event, though.
