i can no longer deal with all these crates of records on my floor

is there an easy consumerist solution? perhaps wooden modules that can be mail-ordered via the internet?

or must i build my own shelves or contract with a friend who can?

any and all suggestions appreciated

errrr, chef -- i think you provided the wrong recipe?

and nomos, yeah that shelf looks like it may have the right dimensions to hold lp's -- so thanks

and woebot, please don't overestimate my capacity for making home improvements -- i.e., i haven't a box of tools, and the sidewalk on this block isn't about to become my workshop

i've seen this recommended. they have one that's twice as wide as well.

i keep my decks on a dining room cabinet (possibly known as a 'buffet' in home decor parlance) that can hide maybe 300-400 records inside. keeps things looking tidy as well.

yeah, i have the double sized one and i can def vouch for its ability to hold a lotta records and it's not that hard to assemble... i also have one homemade shelf from 2 X 4's and one of those yuppie steel kitchen shelves, but the ikea one is def the best option for people w out too much money or carpentry skills...

Yeah, my friend was getting rid of a load of Ikea stuff when he upgraded to better shelving and he gave me the 4x4 version of that (I believe that there is also a 5x5) as well as a couple of another Ikea one which is similar but has a back to it. I think the 4x4 thing holds about fifteen hundred twelves.

Nope. It's called a pantry, but it's really just a shelf with doors. Doors you can close. And lock. Away from children.

17" deep, too. LPs fit really nicely. 5 shelves (and a bit of space for 7"s or CDs or whatever) @ 250 records per shelf = 1250 in the cabinet/pantry with no sweat.

These things here from HTFR are very good

Very easy to build (albeit an electric screwdriver will make things a lot easier) and of good quality, a world away from cheapo argos catalogue flatpack stuff that falls apart if you happen to sneeze in it's presence. There's different sizes of boxes, http://www.htfr.com/vinyl-storage/
this is what a large set of them will look like http://darksidesophistication.blogsome.com/2007/01/22/things-to-be-cheerful-about-in-2007-part-1/

Though due to expensive postage & packaging (heavy pieces of wood is never going to be cheap by courier) people outside UK or Europe need not apply

i recently purchased one of these, freindly service and seems cheaper than many other module systems. it has yet to fall down, touch wood!

Ikea Expedit

I've just bought a bigger version of the Expedit bookshelf that Nomos linked to, and I've gotta say it's good for the money;

http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/00071356

Shelves are perfect size for 12s/lps. Very solid. Can be secured to the wall if you're worried about it toppling over, but if you fill from the bottom I reckon the weight of the vinyl and wood combined will keep it stable. My 5 year old hasn't tried climbing up it yet, so don't quote me on that last bit.

Each section holds about 80 records depending on thickness of covers (80 is based on a mix of lps & 12s). So you could theoretically hold 2000 in it. I've got less, about half that and it seems to be coping OK. The sections don't have a back section, so if it's not against the wall, the vinyl could be pushed through. Whilst that seems a bit unlikely, if it is up against a thick skirting board it does mean the records can be pushed back a little. Not really an issue though.

Hope that helps.

does anyone still have a copy of that wax poetics article? i'm in need of some cheap 12" shelving and don't quite trust my own diy abilities enough to design one from scratch.

edit: found here if anyone's intersted.
