an irie holidays gift for Dissensians... but maybe you've all seen it already? -- this epic channel 4 documentary is the perfect way to spend some rainy days inside or have on in the background while passing the spliff with friends. awesome Lee Perry footage in the black ark (that man is C.R.A.A.A.A.Z.Y.), beautiful sessions with unknown singers, interviews with old school rastas talking about African roots of Reggae as well as current political climate in JA, historical footage of Selasie I, etc, etc.

love these - bought one on an unofficial dvd a while back, interesting to see they're geteting a proper release

this rapid share thing is well annoying though, i can only DL one file every 101 minutes - any way around that?

incidentally, was watching these with an african friend last night. and during the Selassie footage he mentioned that Selassie murdered many many people who opposed him while assuming power and maybe during his rule. and that he is considered to be a minor Stalin by many in Africa. and that this is NEVER talked about in Jamaica. anyone know more about it?

parts 1 and 2 (5 and 6 above- which is a bit confusing) out now, bunny lee/ black ark out in january (allegedly), last 2 (on one dvd) to follow later in 2008.

they've been put back countless times in the past few years, but the fact that you can now get a 1/3 of the series officially suggests problems have been sorted.

bit of a rip off though- they could have released all of them on one dvd, rather than 2 per, surely?

I've recently been reading Can't Stop Won't Stop and I also wondered about what kind of leader Selassie exactly was...

I did some snooping and found..this

http://www.ephrem.org/~ephrem/archives/1999/m6935.html

I gather there was some near genocidal activities towards Eritreans?

Ethiopians under the leadership of Haile Selassie, have
murdered school children in elementary, high schools, colleges wholesale
without remorse or any sense of humanity. Haile Selassie's troops also
murdered and executed intellectuals, laborers, civil servants, and menial
workers simply because they were ERITREA'S.

Simultaneously, as they had spread dread and death in our cities, they
moved to our rural areas in the lowlands and burned our peoples villages,
raped our mothers and sisters, and conducted wholesale massacres in the
vicinities of Keren, Augured, and Tessenei. In due time, we humiliated Haile
Selassie and as a result of our determination to stand against EVIL, we saw
Haile Selassie's demise and death.

It's strange..you'd think this would be more widely known, but it's hard to find much of anything about it.

Without delving too deep that looks like the site of some kind of political party and so may not be entirely trustworthy.

Is very good.

also worth checking (anarchist)

Also worth mentioning that during his reign a lot of black people looked up to Selassie who weren't rastas, just because he was a black world leader with some great speeches about the world situation.

The fact that he was just as fucked up as some white rulers is hardly surprising.

Also of note - he spent some time living in Bath in Somerset whilst in exile. Was originally buried under a toilet, hence the reburial.

I would love to watch these, 'cause then I would actually know something about reggae.

Maybe I should get a rapidshare account, got a mate who says it's ace, don't think he's downloading music docs tho...:slanted:
