Max 19 goes on holiday and tells you about it in the Guardian

"To be honest, I find the whole travel section of the grauniad pretty irritating. It's a supposedly left wing newspaper, surely they shouldn't give half a shit what the top ten boutique hotels in Puglia are?"
My understanding is that most holiday writing is done on the basis of journalist gets a free holiday and the resort gets a free puff-piece. The whole thing is pretty fucking shocking really.

Yeah, but let's face the awkward truth here, the vast majority of people on the left are middle class, even if not all of us are that well off. Working classes just wanna GETS PAID.

This is a myth, as a glance at the spread of seats and wealth will tell you.

I'd say the Guardian is probably this country's most middle-class daily.

More than the Torygraph? The Guardian is closely associated with a set of values (eco-conscious, anti-war, ethical living etc) which people identify as MC. But the Telegraph's fear and loathing of the working class still seeps into every page.

Hmm, I dunno - the Torygraph's got that kind of aspirational, lower-middle-class ('petit-bourgeois') feel to it sometimes - perhaps the Guardian is more 'effortlessly' middle-class? Who knows, I'm probably talking out of my arse.
They're both clearly out of touch with the common mass of British people, though, as neither paper pays enough attention to the things that really matter, namely Princess Maddie.

OK, I'm exaggerating a bit. But just because people hate the Tories doesn't mean they are left wing, Labour had to move very close to the centre to get into power/prevent SDP type splits. Or at least it doesn't mean they necessarily care about the same "left wing" issues as Guardian readers.

To be honest, I find the whole travel section of the grauniad pretty irritating. It's a supposedly left wing newspaper, surely they shouldn't give half a shit what the top ten boutique hotels in Puglia are? I know I don't - I've got no money, and I want to know whether it's margianlly cheaper to get to Scotland by super advance rail ticket or by National Express funfare or by some unholy combination of the two. *grumbles*

Amen to that. Although, as I kinda like travelling and spend much of my money on it when I stop to think about it, I find the 'consumer' sections even worse. Who gives a fuck about man bags 'worth' £500? Who can afford this stuff?

To the original point, "Are You Experienced?" by William Sutcliffe (?) pretty much nailed this subject for me, comedically speaking.

Obviously young Max is related to one of the section editors, but he seems far more self-aware than many, at least.

The Guardian might as well have "Spreading Champagne Socialism" as its tagline.

Apparently once the "Let's move to" section listed amongst the downsides of a potential house purchase the fact that it was "near a council estate".

I always liked the description of it as a 'great organ of liberal thought turned irritable rag'.

Tbf, they also have a thing about how to get similar stuff for twenty quid at Topman. But yeah, the lifestyle sections and the opinion pages are impressively out of step regarding the whole consumerism thing. Reassuringly, they still seem to average a couple of letters a month pointing this out.

(Also, they've replaced their 'natural health' bint with a Proper Doctor. Hurrah!)

Not singling the Guardian out: the Independent does similarly, with 8 bags priced at £200-500, and then one or two choices for us paupers. This opposite a Mark Steel column on socialism.

the feature has been cut apparently.
the guy is rather distraught as well, according to 'sources'

funny as the guardian are currently holding ethical awards too.
that's always been the thing with them though.

I feel really sorry for the guy.. I'd probably remember something like that for a long long time.

I swear every day I get more and more irritated by the sad, incredibly boring people whose only character trait is priding themselves on how 'bitter and twisted' they are.. it's just lazy really, and the frustrating thing is you can't say anything to them or even begin to get say anything against them, or they'll just start dancing around chanting about how they got the better of you, and how awfully funny it is that you fell for it
