unlike the soul-crushing ugliness that is twitter and facebook

most websites are really ugly (but then most modern design is)
they almost have to be
twitter looks better than facebook though, which is just a cluttered mess
you do have to sift through a lot of tweeting about nothing, but its only truly crap if you follow people tweeting nothing but inanities like 'pressed snooze too many times and now late for work LOL!'

i find penman very funny. i wish all twitter was like that.

what about self-help gurus, televangelists, cult leaders, ascended masters, extreme vegans, and embittered failed stand up comedians?

Twitter destroys narratives, mythos, mystery. We're supposed to be making life bearable by creating narratives for ourselves and each other, or fashioning aesthetics to live by, or with. Instead, we're spitting trivia at each other, dribbling gossip in the ears of our associates, drowning in phlegm and drivel. Twitter is like dating sites -- everybody wants to see your cute face, or check your stats. Even with blogs there was some mystique and distance -- there was certainly space to create worlds. It was a bit of effort for little reward, and there was some integrity in that (it was dissipating and maybe even self-destructive, but still...)

Surely there's something to be said for learning to live without mystique?

twitter stilll gets the thumbs up for news, laughs and watching a story snowball.
Plus if you tweet the name Todd Edwards you're guaranteed retweet from four people you've never heard of

I think twitter makes more mystique.

You just have to take it in terms of entire feeds not individual posts. Or maybe individual posts.

I follow lots of porn stars on my twitter, aside from the constant advertising, there are often very funny posts.

i want to use it to gain access to subcultures such as indigo people and bodybuilders and preppers but almost everyone seems to be selling something

I think forums are a better bet for this.

Twitter and the newer social media sort of weeds them out.

I joined twitter in 2008, wasn't what I thought it was going to be. Started off as a sexier RSS feed with my favourite news and bloggers just posting their articles.

Now a lot of people I originally followed don't blog anymore because they just tweet their opinions.

Following too many of any sort of people will drive you mad. Especially musicians. I rarely have a feed where everyone is talking about the same thing which is cool.
