In other jungle-related news, I was just listening to the Marcus Intalex RA podcast and he talks in it about how jungle raves in Manchester during the early 90's were so dodgy that he'd see people dancing with sawed-off shotguns. Said sawed-offs were used to prompt reloads.

so obviously that FFF track sounds contempo, but was there really nothing along those lines in the 90s? could've sworn the shit i was dancing to (albeit in the 00s) was old school. mostly based on seeing the sleeves and labels.

so if not, what was some of the darker/heavier shit in the 90s?

Check out the two Remarc Lp's on Planet Mu.

don't get me wrong, love me sum choppage, but way more interested in the energy created by the reese/amen combo. was there much from back then that matched the FFF track for pure terror? kind of like what aphex/squarep were getting at, without going that far into idm territory?

I think what you are looking for is maybe later stuff as opposed to jungle - there aren't that many Amen/Reece tunes from before '96, although this is one example:

So maybe you are looking more for stuff like this?

guess i was off the mark and the stuff i'm after is newer than i thought. DJ SS Black is def one of the main tracks which fits the sound. anything else along those lines would be great.

Tech Itch is way too modern/produced sounding.

slightly later, but I've always enjoyed a bit of the 96/97 jump-up style; so here's a mix of some of my favorite tunes in that style from that era

This Dillinja interview always interested me, cos of what he says about perfecting one piece of the track and then just filling in the rest.
