Prodigal Son
As Friday was a day off work here in Berlin for Frauentag (aka International Women's Day), I took the opportunity to put together a little DJ Rap tribute mix. I don't know if she always gets lots of props in terms of jungle nostalgia, but she put out some absolutely killer tracks from 1994 to 1996 and I decided to showcase them in this mix. I really enjoy her style of crispy, booming beats and bass combined with euphoric, ethereal breakdowns. Top producer.

Apparently Dillinja made this in '94 and it was in the vault until last year.

That was originally due on this Vinyl Distribution album that never made it past test press stage; for years the handful of tp’s made circulated at outrageous markups as there were a couple other unreleased exclusives on there, like a VIP mix of The License and another of The First Sequence by Photek

This is true. I love her and her music. It was great the way she saw right through that Jungle Council bollocks and kept on playing M-Beat.

Default Craner's Top 100
It's what the people are waiting for.

Why?

1. His taste is impeccable, but also idiosyncratic, especially on this forum, and I'm genuinely curious as to what would qualify.
2. He always writes good stuff to accompany his COTD selections.

How?

I would suggest a maximum one selection per day, with accompanying mini (or not) essay.

One choon per artist, so it isn't just 50 killah priest b-sides.

Jungle veteran J Majik announces first album in over 20 years, Full Circle - https://www.residentadvisor.net/news/43587

J Majik is back with a new album on his label Infrared.

Full Circle is James Spratling's first LP in more than 20 years, following 1997's Slow Motion. As the title implies, it's a look back at his roots and the golden era of '90s jungle, meant to emphasize the enduring "futuristic" sound of jungle in the wake of the neurofunk sound that largely replaced it.

After an extended hiatus, Spratling was inspired to return to making music after DJing a Rupture party in London, where he felt "an atmosphere he hadn't seen since the '90s." The press release calls Full Circle an "optimistic" album with "filmic soundscapes à la John Carpenter."

That track on this soundcloud link is pretty enjoyable!

I used to like this tune, then a few months ago I was watching ‘The Specialist’ on TV, enjoying its shitness and there was the ridiculous pseudo-erotic tense scene with Sylvestor Stallone and Sharon Stone and I suddenly recognised the samples from this. It was a delightful double take. Excellent b-movie sampling, almost as good as the heyday of 93-4!

Yeah, I discovered that a while back. I asked PJ where it came from a few years back and he said he couldn't remember.

You can tell listening to the first generation of grime mcs that they started out with jungle. Major ace and maxwell d probably sound better here than in any other context to tell the truth. Stormin was brilliant on jungle too of course. I've got a tape somewhere of a Dizzee with nasty crew set where they do jungle for the last 10, 15 minutes and it's amazing.
