hey guys!

i'm on a research right now about songs in contemporiry warfare (or of self proclaimed revolutionairy, or liberation movements).
battlefield songs, hamas-songs, PLO-songs, IRA-songs, congo revolution music stuff like that in general...

Mid east, Africa, Latin America would be the most interesting, though.

Does anybody have an idea where to find stuff like that, music, lyrics, transscripts, translations... ?

I've only started my research so i'd be thankful for every idea really.

thx in advance
best,
boredom

Someone who used to post here linked once to a piece he wrote about the music played in vids over jihadi attacks on US soldiers in Iraq - sorry to be no more helpful than that, but i think it was written for stylus - they'll be a link on this site somewhere

Zhao is referring to 'Music of the Intifada'. Available here for a ridiculous price, but can be picked up for far less if you go looking. I got a copy for a few quid years back:

From the linernotes:

"Music of the Intifada is a popular celebration of the current struggle. It points out issues and symbols central to the Palestinian resistance such as the people, the land and freedom. Not only does it summarize Palestinian aspirations but also it reflects the radical social changes that are being brought about by the daily struggle against occupation."

The tracks in arabic language were recorded in 1988 in West Berlin.

and i just found a very (very) cheap copy. look in your PM box Boredom ;)

There's that, and a load in the related video which are songs from Sendero Luminoso, the Peruvian Maoist group that fought a civil war against the government in the 70's and 80's.

Evil, EVIL motherfuckers, i lost a load of respect for Zach De La Rocha when i saw the video to Bombtrack, never bought anything ratm related after that.

In terms of Irish republicanism, the hardcore would be The Irish Brigade, mainly cassette only releases in the 80s/early 90s. Songs include My Little Armalite and Sam Missiles in the Sky (the latter a rewrite of Ghost rider in the sky fantasing about the IRA using ground to air missiles).

yeah pretty crazy huh? i saw Mazen at Konfrontationen festival last year... and his style of hissing drones and tense silences are incredibly apt in this case. scary how well it suits the seasoned skills of the Israeli Airforce :D:slanted::eek::(

Dexy's Midnight Runners

Dexy's Midnight Runners had an unsual one in the context of UK charts

One of those things including the verse
Anyway, so I started asking around, you know.
I started making a few enquiries,
just putting out a few feelers
Yeah? Yeah.
I had a word with a couple of so called socialists on my way
And during the course of our conversation
I put to them a question, I said:
"How do you feel about Ireland?"
Ireland? Yeah, Ireland
That place, it's just across the sea
Oh yeah, I know the place
Well they said:
"We're for Sandinista, Cuba's militia,
the P L O, M.P.L.A, Afghanistan and Babylon"
They went on and on and on and on.
And I said: "Alright, Alright,
but what do you think about Belfast?"
And what did they say?
Well, their replies were various
but they all had one thing m common.
And what was that?

They all sounded the same
You mean they sounded alike ?
They all sounded the same

Thinking some more on the Irish side, there is the whole Republican Flute Band tradition - instrumentals not songs clearly, but with the whole band thing is quite militaristic with uniforms etc.

I have this pet theory that there's a link between the flute band sound (both republican and loyalist) and the popularity of hardcore in ireland - check out this bass drum:
