Thread: Disco!

  1. #1

    Default Disco!

Now then, I know that 99.99% of Dissensians are doctrinaire junglists and 2-steppers (otherwise, why are you here?) and therefore go backwards, as evidanced by the smashing success of the 80s soul thread. So I propose we go back a decade and showcase your favorite disco tracks. And if this works, we can go and do a Northern Soul/Motown/Stax thread, but let's see. Disco is not just disco, but pseudo-disco and disco not disco also, but I presume you will all recognise the remit. We're talking, mainly, 70s and early 80s disco-orientated dance music, primarily of American origin. Italo-disco doesn't count.

    A scattering, from me:

Evelyn 'Champagne' King (posted by Oliver 'Cognac' Craner), 'Shame':

Rare Pleasure, 'Let Me Down Easy':

Tamiko Jones, 'Can't Live Without Your Love':

    Dinosaur, 'Kiss Me Again':

    Gary's Gang, 'Let's Lovedance Tonight'

    Loose Joints, 'Tell You (Today):

    Hall & Oates, 'Crime Pays':

I have no idea how obscure/known this stuff is (I look forward to this thread turning me onto some fresh craziness, which the "no italo" rule should help with)

I think this one was quite well known.

Thank you Craner! I have a lot to learn so this will be good.

    This is a favourite:
    Instant Funk - Dark Vader

Last year I read Tim Lawrence's book Love Saves the Day which traces the scene year by year (sometimes week by week) through the decade. Amazing work, based on hundreds of interviews.

Also saw the documentary Maestro which is disappointing. Too much scene-y blather and regurgitating the litany. The DVD extras are better. David Mancuso sounding like a knob talking about sound systems. The filmmaker getting schooled on how systems really work by the engineer who did the Garage.

    Some (obvious?) faves:

I know I just did Diana Ross, but I'll stop short of Michael Jackson, cos I guess you all know it through and through. Rock With You's one of my favourite songs.

There's a lovely song by George McCrae - You Treat Me Good - which I can't find on Youtube. He's the guy who did Rock Me Baby and I Get Lifted. Could go on a bit of a TK Records tangent...

I could also go nuts on Earth Wind & Fire's disco era and The Emotions, but I guess anyone who's here already knows how good that stuff is?

oh! such a brit, with the need to so tightly categorize and delineate. i reckon 1/4 of my list above is non-american and therefore possibly italo? sorry!
