i don't know specifics for this year but in general, september is a pretty good time to be in nyc. everyone goes away/chills out in august, then shifts into high gear when they get back. for example, september is the start of the new gallery season with lots of big-name shows in chelsea, if you're into that sort of thing. plus the weather is usually good: still warm but not summer hot anymore or fall/winter cold yet.

and yeah, check time out ny as you get closer to your dates.

Quality, my GF is a part time art buff having done History Of Art at uni (yes I know, classic 'pointless' degree) so hopefully we'll find something she's in to amongst the openings, although saying that my legs just about died doing the rounds of Guggenheim, MoMA and the Metropolitan last year. Good job the weather will be good too, staying at my sister's new place with roof terraces and pool. Better pack my speedos.

is there anything decent to do in paris?

The good thing about Paris is that you can easily get to everything on foot, even using only the Metro map as a guide. 12 hours of sloping about and you can see all the major sights.

Bars and whatnot are open very late and the city centre feels safe, so night-time perambulations are pleasurable.

Latin Quarter probably best for music shopping and socialising purposes. Le Marais, which has a strong gay demographic, is also lively.

cool music shopping is on the list. im mostly looking for things to do in the day as my friend isnt at work at night. im sure she will recommend stuff as well but hey, this place usually knows what's good.

nyc is pretty piss poor for record stores nowadays, hardly any shops left. if you hit other music and turntable labs in manhattan, maybe halcyon in dumbo/brooklyn for dance 12" and academy in williamsburg for older used vinyl, you've about covered everything worth doing. unfortunately.

i'm not in paris, but i will be. i'm choosing to go there to visit someone, but i gave myself some free days because i thought i'd be able to fill them.

last year in amsterdam i spent a free day reading a book in a park and looking round the adidas shops. i don't think i want to repeat that.

i was going to suggest you go to Rue des Petits Ecuries and find the New Morning jazz club (next to the supermarket) ...standing outside everyday at around midday there's a guy called Mandela, buy cent balles of merde off him and go smoke it at the Quai de Valmy next to Chateau D'eau... then walk all the way south along the canal looking at the awesome buildings and beautiful girls in the canal-side cafes. but then if spending a day reading in the park is your idea of a wasted day then i guess it's lucky that i didn't suggest the above :)

well it wasn't a wasted day obviously but if i die and i know the only day i spent alive in amsterdam i spent reading in a park which i basically could have done in leicester, then perhaps it was wasted. if i genuinely thought it was a waste then i wouldn't have been reading.
