I have the unmixed version of that comp and its predecessor - both amazing.

I think the best sustained argument for artcore/ambient-jungle being where it's at is this Grooverider mix on this comp. Both hyper-swirly melodies and atmospherics and some of the most body-confounding grooves ever.

bare BARE BONES
anyone remember the term "artcore" or was that just a made-up name tacked on to comps?

The woebot mix brings back fond memories of a comp that was my intro to jungle via an older cousin. It's not exactly ambient but it did introduce me to a lot of those sounds/textures/etc.:

I'm not sure exactly why, but this CD had a mysterious aura to it that I found irresistible. The subculture that it hinted at was so foreign to me... twisted diva samples, timestretching, liquid echoing snare rolls, dark spacey pads. In the pre-internet days it was like stumbling across a time capsule from an alien civilization. I think Reynolds also made a good point about the early jungle monikers: DJ Nut Nut, Chimera, Krome & Time, Dead Dred, Cool Hand Flex, The Dubster, Dillinja... those badass names were probably half of the appeal.

Thanks for this link, great mix! been really enjoying it, nice quality too

Yeah, I was using the terms more in the sense suggested by Woebot's mix. Still i think that Grooverider's disc sounds much more melodic and floaty than its tracklist would suggest.

Especially compared to my other favourite mix by him, Hardstep Selection II, which must have been done less than a year later but sounds a lot rougher and less melodic by and large.

the opening track on that comp from T Power has been my jam the last few days... that's one of the most unbelievably hysterical samples i can think of.

Had a lot of time for T-Power. He dared to experiment with the form.
We used to mix 'ambient' with the hard stuff. Room for both.
But for guaranteed dancefloor action, I wouldn't have bet
'ambient' against, say, 'Drop Dead Caddy'.

Did they change the name for full release? My promo says 'Dead' and I can't think back that far to recall if it was changed.

It's funny how *ambient* here means jazz samples, birdsong, hints of Buddah lounge. It doesn't relate at all to ambient music *pwopa*.

There's usually something aquatic going on too. Like a shampoo and conditioner advert, the nubile beauty bathing under a waterfall.

I was wondering about that myself

I think the way bukem uses breaks in Atlantis is an indicator - the drums don't attack, the cymbals become like soft splashing water, or rustling leaves or some other cliché... But the point is he makes the breakbeats lulling and (forgive the word) gorgeous.

Dunno if Atlantis was the first ambient jungle tune butbl it's got to be the best, right?

Bongos. Reverbed bongos.

Snatches of singing, wordless, orgasmic even. Like a happy ending massage amidst the scented candles
