Music industry after pre-teens

"This won't be news to anyone with offspring, but now it's official: the music business is coming for your children. That's the five-to-11-year-olds, who, it seems, comprise one of the hottest new consumer groups in pop. Yes, Little Miss over there, squealing along to Jamelia, and that mini-rapper practising his Usher dance moves - they're not just children, they're a new pop demographic. And the recording industry wants them."

"'We're targeting sophisticated, pop-hungry pop people,' says Eddie Ruffett of Universal Music."

quite possibly the biggest overstatement in the article.

at first this worried me but actually i think this is good news. by the time these kids hit their 'rebellious' teen years, they will want something other than the spoonfed pop they were getting. (ie rap, metal, punk) which i don't know about you (but i imagine for most people) is how i got into 'independent' music. so hopefully (fingers crossed) this silly marketing plan will have the reverse effect.
