Inevitability

it was that old cold warrior isaiah berlin who wrote most forcefully against the hegelian-marxian notion of inevitability. but perhaps the capitalists have some round to the idea, while the left has abandoned it, over the past fifty years? in that time the marxist project has run aground -- not something you could have predicted in the '50s or '60s -- while, on its own terms, capitalism has had a pretty good innings.

so is the concept integral to either world-view, or just an expression of confidence in one's own project?
