New African music

Eric

Mr Moraigero
Recently Jace/Rupture posted some mp3s on his blog of an Angolan music called kuduro. They're down now but here is his description:

--------

if you need labels, it sounds vaguely like fast Brazilian reggaeton, except it's African (with all the local polyglot plurality that implies), and more techno. And Helder 'King of Kuduro' reminds me of Wayne Lonesome, which is just strange. Both tracks from his album "Ladies Night"

-------

Pretty nice stuff to my ear. I've been tracking kwaito for awhile now and of course there is rai etc but hearing this stuff made me wonder what else is going on there I haven't picked up on at all. The Konono thing is also of interest of course and has been talked about a good deal here too. Anyone know of anything else?

While more of an immiation of american hip hop than say grime, funk carioca, or kwaito there is a lot of good african rap.

check out the documentary posted on africanhiphop.com or some of the streams from africanhiphopradio.com

My friend the funk dj loved the kuduro stuff I sent him via email, where I wrote to him that it was from Angola .... he asked me though if Angola was a kind of rabbit. !!!!! shit. isn't there a kind of wool or something that has a name like that? (angora?) maybe that's what he was thinking of. kind of funny anyway.

RDP África (Portuguese state radio, transmitted from Lisbon) features lots of music from Lusophone Africa (Angola, Moçambique, São Tomé e Príncipe, Cabo Verde) and sometimes Brazil. Some ace music programs so plenty of kuduro, afro-zouk, kizomba, etc but also lots of talk shows. Listen here, click on Emissão online (right bar).

i put on a party last night with matias aguayo playing and he played a mixture of cumbia, kudoro, tango and south african house, mixed up with techno stuff and him singing too, it was fantastic, so danceable and warm.
