An appeal for good Mac shareware

Got me a swinging new Imac with OSX, which I am still figuring out, having been using 9.2.2 (which is shite) for too long.

Got open office on the go but I'd also be keen to get hold of some decent shareware for the following:

1) Basic HTML editing - nothing special, I used to use Dreamweaver 2 and barely touched on the functionality of that. Essentially just tables, text and graphics I think. Be good if it had a built in ftp facility too.

2) Mp3 editing - i.e. chopping up long tracks, or sticking short tracks together.

And indeed anything else which people think is essential. I don't mind paying the odd tenner here or there if it's good.

No, cos I bought it about a week beforehand, like a twat.

Not that I care, really. It will do what I want it to do and is massively better than the old one.

Thanks, hint and Droid! Will check the links at home later.

Since getting my Mini I've been loading it up with nicely made little freeware apps. There's a lot out there for OS X now...

Audion (http://www.panic.com/audion/)
Mp3 player/editor. Now free.

Taco (http://www.tacosw.com/)
Free HTML editor

Image Well (http://www.xtralean.com/IWOverview.html)
Tiny image editor for basic stuff like cropping. Built in FTP.

Flip4Mac (http://www.flip4mac.com/)
Recently devoured by Microsoft. Play and save Windows Media files in Quicktime.

VoodooPad (http://flyingmeat.com/voodoopad/)
A little Wiki system for your desktop. Sketch out ideas, etc.

Cyberduck (http://cyberduck.ch/)
Free FTP client. I haven't tried this one but it looks nice.

How much was it?

About £1200 or so but I stuck a big hard drive and some extra RAM in it.

Money via dead relative. I got my first Mac (a IICX) when my auntie went off to be a nun and divested herself of all her worldly goods.

John - I never knew. I too have a distant relative who became a nun, and if I'd known you too shared this stigma, I'd have been a lot more tactful in my dealings with you.

Asking cos I need a 'puta pronto, and was thinking of hitting the Mac shop in Regent St. Had an iMac I got for £300 (the blue weird shaped screen) in 2002 after it 'fell off' something, but it exploded recently.

I would unreservedly recommend the Mini if you're on a tightish budget or don't want a built-in screen. I got the stealth-upgraded version with 64Mb RAM and 1.5 Ghz processor and it's a nice step up from my TiBook (also an an inheritance splurge) at about a fifth of the price.

You'll have to excuse me cos I'm quite thick when it comes to tech stuff. What can you do with this? Can you gon online easily / download stuff off Soulseek / mix and make tracks / install Quark and Photoshop stuff on a Mini?

Oh aye. She was one of my more likeable relatives an all, I was a bit gutted. Apparently the vicar came round one day and said something along the lines of "oh well xxxx, it doesn't look like you'll ever find a husband, have you thought about becoming a nun?"

So she ended up in a c of e closed order, which is pretty obscure really.

Yeah I had one of them blue imacs as well (gasp! parallel lives or what? ). Pretty good until all the operating systems changed and I got left behind...

Oh yeah and the mac shop in Regents Street is best avoided. Seriously it's like some mutual masturbation warehouse for apple devotees stroking ipods. And big queues.

I got mine off the apple website, but I've done alright in that big shop on Tottenham Court Road near Hanway Street before as well.

Jesus. Week of the living coincidences.

Sadly my 2nd cousin retarded became a Catholic nun, I think it was just so she could beat boys. The £1,200 sounds great, but is way out of my price range at the moment. Still, will check out the TCR store - thanks for recommendation.

It's great actually. More than ample for online stuff, downloading, word processing. I've also been running photoshop and a lot of audio production software on it without any hitches. plus it's about as big as a small stack of CDs. I got 1 Gb of RAM which seems to go a long way.

Cheers, will check it out!

the best way to get a really cheap computer at the moment has to be linux on the old x-box.

it has ethernet, dvd player, usb for keyboard and mouse, 10GB harddrive and i expect with every kid upgrading to 360s theyre for sale very cheaply. you can even send away and have some one else install it for you for free for the joy of ripping off MS.
