reminds me of a work by video artist Gary Hill from some fifteen years ago. Hill used a similar principle: in one of his pieces a voice emanates from a speaker that is slowly being covered by sand, while the voice discusses the actual process of the covering. the results are somewhat similar to your youtube selection, mms, though not as geometric and in fact patently humorous (like many of Hill's pieces)

that's a very pretty version of something like <a href="http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/dp5/pattern2.htm">Chladni's sound figures</a> (late 18th century), though they use a bow on the side of the sand-plates - same effect tho.
