Not sure if anyone else on here was familiar with the free underground music/counterculture publication Arthur Magazine, but they just recently anounced that they're ceasing operations.
This is sad news for the psych/stoner/doom/noise/folk/experimental scenes, as Arthur has been a huge support, and have helped focalize these scenes into kind of a new counterculture. The LA underground these days IS psych, thanks in part to Arthur's influence. Just at the Om show in Echo Park last friday, my friend and I were noticing (to our amusement, as we've been huge psych fans for years) how all the hipsters in those parts seemed to have turned into hippies lately... talk about irony in the indie scene...
I'm going to miss the Arthur-run festivals in particular... where I got a chance to see artists ranging from Six Organs of Admittance to Yoko Ono to Fiery Furnaces to Joanna Newsom to Merzbow to Growing and Sun O))). Much thanks to Jay Babcock and Laris Kreslins for a great magazine and some spectacular shows. Long live Arthur Magazine!
