As of next Thursday morning all the rolling genre threads with the postfix "breaking news, gossip, libel, lies etc," are going to be shut down.

I've talked it through with all the moderators and 2Stepfan has written a little explanation which puts it very well and which will be posted on all the threads:

<b>"We're delighted see that this thread has proved so popular with Dissensus users and that so much has been contributed to it. However, this thread (and the other "Gossip and Lies" threads) are getting so long that they are pretty unmanageable, and they're beginning to suck a bit of the life out of the forum. Virtually all of the posts here would work better and get more attention if they were in proper, smaller threads. So we're going to close this thread and all the other "Gossip and Lies" threads (other than the cricket one, which is so different from all the others that it probably still has a place). We know some of you have really enjoyed this thread so we're giving you a week (seven days from now) to make your farewell posts, then we're going to close it. After that, we'd love it if you could contribute this energy to the broader forum."</b>

What we'd like to encourage people to do is simply post good threads about music. Don't post just any old fluff, for instance think for a split second if there's an existing thread which you could add to or if the world really needs a thread about so and so's belly button, but do feel free to post into the main forum.

If it's a topic lots of people are interested in it will keep itself bumped up, that in turn will encourage people who might not normally be interested to check it out. Oh, yes as per Paul's spiel, the Cricket thread will remain open.

I don't have the attention span to deal with a world without rolling genre threads.

Do you reckon that's true? I never met yer man, but I know this is the first place I check most days if I'm checking places, just because of the people and what they got to say, threads are kind of irrelevant, if they're not relevant it's pretty obvious, no?

upper-class gentlemans' clubs will escape the national smoking ban now this, a thread about an upper-class sport escapes the gossip thread ban....jeez

I find the Grime thread really usefull for keeping up with news of new releases, sets and so on.A lot of this info wouldn't warrant a thread of its own and if the promoter/artist in question is not a poster on this forum,I can't see this stuff getting posted in the Events,Releases and Mixes section either.

i guess it's true. if you searched for something on this forum, and only mention of it is in one of those threads, you'd be out of luck. or out of 3 hours wading through it.

I'm not an expert on the search here but you can make it bring up specific posts instead of threads you know.

yeah you can get it to show posts rather than threads. it's very versatile.

the only real problem with the search is, as i mentioned on the poll thread, that it can't search for 3-letter words. we use a lot of those for things like dub, hip hop, eno, etc. i'd been meaning to bring that up before. not sure if the software allows for changes like that.

I think the best you can do is use a wildcard - dub* etc, but obviously that's going to bring up a lot of other stuff too.

I think its a rubbish idea. I subscribe to the rolling grime, dubstep, reggae and hip hop threads. If someone posts to that thread I get an email notification. Other than that I pay scant attention to any other posts as I am far too short of time.

This is a forum and the users have come up with a really good way of organising content and stopping thread overload and the administrators have decided that they don't like this and are going to shut them down. Who is the forum for? I appreciate greatly the time and effort involved in managing a forum but this hardly qualifies as abuse.

I would sum up the idea as "a pile of wank"

But thanks, I suppose, with those threads gone I shall probably not come here at all and thus save myself at least some time.

*sigh*

That's a shame. We could use some more of your upbeat spout. :D

Guilty as charged. However in this overload-of-information age I was simply lamenting the loss of something that was, to me, so useful. Childish and poor use of language aside I stand by what I said :)

those threads were almost something that was imposed more than anything else. well, the grime one certainly was, then the other "copy cat" threads popped up ;)

I'm sorry that we are not able to accomodate your busy schedule here at Dissensus, blubeat. But thank you for your comments all the same (tho presumably you won't be reading this).

For my part I would like to think that this is a place for all sorts of discussions, not just somewhere for people to grab news about 4 genres they care about. It is a community and benefits from breaking down "silos" so we get a bit more social cross-pollenation.

Personally I am very pleased with the new grime threads and would like there to be more discussion about dancehall.

Some of the threads in "Misc" have been excellent this week as well.

Sorry Bluebeat - the forum works better without all the activity being in a few threads. You might try using the RSS feeds rather than the email alerts for the Music and Events subforums - you'd be able to scan the headlines and catch what interests you.

Agh! I was just sayin' is all. I wish I could spend more time on here but my kids see the PC on and they want Cbeebies! We compromise on my music (which on some occasions John is *your* music) and their websites! I liked the rolling threads and when I had time I checked the others but the rolling threads were good! Especially when any update to those threads went straight to my email and straight to my phone. It meant I never missed a comment on any of the rolling threads and I liked it!!

Still we live ina democracy and if John and Mr 2 Step say it's all good then I will have to show some trust.

Anyway, I'm old, I complain, and what? :)

Hmmm. So where should I a post a "So who is coming to see Jah Shaka on Sunday?" thread and, 2stepfan, will you be reaching DMZ?
