Music and the Taliban

zhao

there are no accidents
makes sense, pretty common practice for all fascist groups when they take control, no? destroy a community's cohesion by repressing music, and replace local tradition with pro-regime jingles...

does anyone know about afghan star? the tv series and the documentary about it? google it if not.

i wrote a whole feature for the statesman about it, interviewed the director etc, which they still haven't run (6 months later), because the channel four screening date keeps getting postponed. it was on more4 once in april tho. if this goes on much longer i'll just post it on my blog.

it's brilliant (the film, not my piece), massively revealing, and needs to be seen by everyone.

Very excited to see Afghan Star. Slightly different but really enjoyed mahgreb star academy.

Thinking about Taliban references in music. There's a fair few in Soca including one that details the post 9/11 world to a trample beat brilliantly. It may be called Soca Taliban. Will check later.

Also, hai Dan.

The pulses also fooled Colonel General Khodaidad, Afghanistan's minister of counter-narcotics, even though the spherical black beans, about the size of small ball bearings, looked nothing like poppy seeds. When shown the mung beans by the Guardian, he said they were a strain of "super poppy".

Sounds like something from the Brass Eye drugs episode.
