provide examples. I was probably the target demographic for prime vaporwave and I really don't know too much

god damn it now i have to do a retrospective mix of the stuff that's worth keeping. because of course i love everything on this chart but i won't go as far as saying *all of it* is worth even interrupting your day for

the common factor of all 5 is that they have an unnerving + displacing quality that post-2014-vaporwave has avoided, or is -not capable- of evoking. in some sense maybe the sonic array of vaporwave-chillwave in general is -no longer capable- of evoking this feeling.
so what is?
where do we go for unnerving, displacing, dissociative/dissociating electronic music being produced now, that could not be produced anytime but now?

thirdform is a paragon but he and i have ultimately opposing aesthetic sensibilities. i dont think im unnerved/displaced/dissociated by what he is

vaporwave in its prime had this quality in a way that was decidedly not forceful or militant or even avant-garde. it was an outgrowth of chillwave and it is undoubtedly pop music and -about engaging with- pop music

this is not universally true btw i love his top 100 but 'whiteboi cannabinoid stupor' is part of my dna and probably in a very literal sense

i feel like previous attempts at discussing this thread in 2010s music have been talked over no matter how much i try to compose myself about it and it actually hurts my feelings

you people can admit this kind of hyperbole for dubstep or its antecedents because it was formative for you (which i can respect) but not for chillwave and vaporwave. why?

vaporwave in its prime was too good + had too many connections with other forms of internet-dependent music (dubstep-in-its-prime among them, actually!) to be this under-theorised and left for cynical bandcamp tape hustlers and hapless contemporary teens

personally im interested and tried to discuss it on this forum. there's music and facets of internet culture i deeply care about and would want to discuss that dissensus (and everyone else i know) doesn't touch and yeah its frustrating at times.
