1000 albums to hear before you die in The Guardian

alexis petridis never edited hip hop connection! i think he worked for some dance mags, not HHC though.

the R&B choices are a bit weird - are brandy's second album or aaliyahs third *really* good albums? great singles, of course, but not sure about anything more than that. these lists should allow for best ofs or greatest hits albums cos sometimes those are the artists' best albums.

he edited mixmag

definitely not hip hop connection

he had that weird phase of trying to bury that with anti dance music phase a while back

supreme clientele?! are you serious??

I've gotta say I prefer Supreme clientele as well. Productions better on Ironman, but Ghostfaces rhyming on 'Nutmeg' and 'One' are amazing, and 'Childs Play' always brings a lump to my throat and a tear to my eye. Supreme clientele rules!

Alexis Petridis never edited Hip-Hop Connection. He worked for Mixmag when Dorian Lynskey was editor, then edited Select. In fairness to the guy, working for Mixmag for a couple of years would probably make me pray for the death of dance music, too.

yeah, just imagine being made to go see judge jules / fat boy slim for the 500th time that year. that would kill it for me too. but he is a cynical old fucker and i can't forgive him for embracing shite indie in preference to all the other interesting things that were going on, aside from big room cheesy uk dance.

i like lists though, just went and downloaded quite a few things i hadn't heard.

that's why ironman is the better album in my opinion.. lyrically isn't as strong but the production and the way it interacts with ghostface voice makes it a more interesting, consistant listening experience

I can't help but think a "1000 albums to strenuously avoid hearing before you die" could have been a lot more entertaining to read.

1,000 albums to listen to while you die; 1,000 albums to kill yourself/other people to; 1,000 albums that make you wish you were dead... the possibilities are endless really

'Pampered Menial' by Pavlov's Dog. If it's not too late for you, don't bother hearing this album, it manages to be deeply average and frighteningly crap at the same time. Quite a feat.

If I was going to have an album for killing people by, it would obviously be something all gentle and y'know, like, cooly inappropriate like some crap by Elvis Costello.

Obv, I'd do my slayings in balletic slow-motion too.

The whole joke with Bateman's generic taste is that it was taken straight from similar lists made in the 80s. If that book was written now, Bateman would probably be downloading Sufjan Stevens tracks from itunes.

Read yesterday's installment. Pretty shite amount of metal albums, if you ask me (Judas Priest, Metallica and Mastadon (wtf?)), and only one hardcore album (Minor Threat discography).

And Lemon frocking Jelly?
