1000 albums to hear before you die in The Guardian

The last lot are up now.

I'm quite impressed that they've got Run the Road in there -

Run the Road (2005)
A great document of the UK's most exciting underground movement since punk. Many thought this compilation (rounding up Dizzee Rascal, Roll Deep, Tinchy Stryder, Kano and Lady Sovereign among others) would signal grime going overground. Truth is, these tracks still sound too harsh and uncompromising for the mainstream.

Apart from random omissions (including some really obvious cannonization fodder - no Zappa, no Band) my only major quibbles are the lack of drum and bass (I would have expected one or two of New Forms, Timeless, Black Secret Technology, one of the Metalheadz comps, something by 4 Hero, Calibre, even Pendulum, but Omni Trio were pretty much all we got) and the way that there's a lot of good English folk but almost no traditional Irish (Christy Moore, okay, but no Bothy Band, Planxty, Boys of the Lough, Sweeny's Men...)

But that's picking nits. I guess the main complaint is that the list makes it clear that there's a more knowledge and appreciation of dance / urban music there than makes it into the paper on a regular basis...

wow only in the first "C" section and i'm already really surprised to see the chameleons' script of the bridge on there (haven't heard this in 4 or 5 years at least, or even anyone mention them, or care about them, or admit to liking this...)

and we've already got some terrible shit on here:

Comets on Fire
Field Recordings from the Sun (2002)

Clouddead
Clouddead (2001)

The Chemical Brothers
Dig Your Own Hole (1997)

The Charlatans
The Charlatans (1995)

Cat Power
The Greatest (2006)

Chameleons are extraordinarily popular with men of a certain age.

Cat Power
The Greatest (2006)

That ain't shit.

Let's Talk About Ceps
I'm a bit surprised by the number of compilations in this list, including the only Cabaret Voltaire CD I have; a collection of 12" singles from the mid-80s. :slanted:

Yeah I recall buying into much of that sort of shit and like thinking Fatboy Slim videos were "innovative" or something.

i personally would like to hear a rant from nomad about how Catpower sucks ass. (a year ago i also would have disagreed)

Where should I start?

The annoying fake blues? The annoying poses in her press photos?

She and Joanna Newsom should have a baby together, it would rival even Jewel for being a talentless moron.

if by "fake" you mean inauthentic, your use of this word would necessitate the existence of the real and authentic yes? i'm not arguing to the contrary. the rockist stance makes sense in some instances. like this one.

There's a temptation to get quite sniffy over lists and I do when in company. But in the social isolation of my own home I find them quite useful. I've found both Pitchforkmedia and the Wire's end of year lists to be a good source of information. There are many superb albums that would've passed me by had it not been for such convenient lists.

I could be accused of being lazy or sheeplike but who has the time to do all the donkey work themselves, apart from music journos?

Of course there's no definitive list or anything approaching it. We could accuse the Guardian of eurocentricism etc. but, though not wrong, is missing the point.

As for Ironman; if Supreme Clientele is better I've been missing out and had better get it pronto.

No, really by fake I mean "no talent"

i think, and many will prolly agree, that the catpower chick does have talent. she is able to write decent songs, plays pretty well, and does have a nice voice. i dont think lack of talent is the problem with catpower.

"the greatest" is not that bad. the girl can sing, there's some good songs on there, nice production etc.

it might not belong on a 1000 albums list and what have you, but this list is pretty much like that japanese list (where are the solo albums albums from the YMO members? why is not "Technodelic" on there? how come there is Sandii&the Sunsetz but no Masami Tsuchiya ("Rice Music")? My knowledge of Japanese music outside the YMO-universe is close to zero, so the list (and the book) is probably a good starting point for investigation, but right away I can tell that the person writing has different taste (which is what it boils down to).

these lists serve one main purpose. to create debate and to point the "general public" to some good stuff.

And as such it seems like the Guardian's effort is a success? And bless them for including both Burial's and Jan Petter Molvaer's debuts. Burial's has sold 20 000, but if the main stream press can bring stuff like this forward all the better for it. Lists or no lists.

1000 items is too much for any list though.

Nice try....but what a weird list.

http://blogs.guardian.co.uk/music/2007/11/1000_albums_to_hear_before_you.html

Be interested to see how this develops, but so far I have to say that I'm pretty impressed. Plenty of standard canonical stuff, which there is nothing wrong with and is only to be expected (this is a list of 1,000 albums you "need to hear", after all) but some great choices and total curveballs, too. Wondering what everyone else is thinking. And before anyone asks, I had nothing to do with this whatsoever, so how Ce'Cile ended up being recommended I don't know, but i'm very happy to see it...

Prince & The Revolution-Parade

Over Sign O' The Times? I understand why with some groups/artists they stuck with their first releases but some of these decisions regarding artists/groups with MULTIPLE great albums or albums you can regard as classics leave a lot to be desired. Many of the Hip Hop, urban and R&B albums picks seemed to be random and made no sense at all. My rule of thumb is STICK TO WHAT YOU KNOW...whatever you don't know delegate to someone else. This list is a random collection of some great material and a bunch of choices that make you stare dumbfounded at your monitor.

One.
