Ragga Jungle

i can't get enough of ragga jungle at the moment!

anyway i guess a fair few people on here were around at the time that this kicked off.... i want stories people! filthy, dirty stories...

i recently read, and really enjoyed, 'all crews' which talks a bit about the moodiness of jungle raves when the ragga sounds became more popular.. so how moody are we talking here? i seem to remember someone posting on here that MCs would have to tell the crowd to stop letting off their guns cos it was disturbing the rave...

actually what i really want are links to good ragga jungle mixes.. i've picked up most of the cd comps. the more ragga vocals the better!

cheers. any in particular you'd recommend??

and where's the first hand accounts?? come on you old junglists...

well dj wise i'd be going for tango, ratty, randall, top buzz, kenny ken... not exactly ragga jungle tho (maybe excepting some later kenny ken) but better imo. it all got very flat and monotonous round that time not to mention aggressive. all of a sudden jungle was purely urban and that was not what it meant to most of the original crews. you'll find most of the jungle pioneers felt the same way too.

was that cos of the introduction of ragga influences or vice versa? what came first? is there any other reading you'd recommend about the arrival of the jungle/ragga jungle divide??

i can't get enough of bounty killer, barrington levy etc. over jungle beats.. pure fire!

The Last Word

I was into for a bit but then wasn't this the last word on the matter

for me after Krumble's Discobreaker the Amen break was just dead.......

Check out the tune around eleven minutes into this: DJ Ron @ AWOL 94 Side B For the full effect listen to the first half of the mix first

Ron and Kenney Ken have to be two of the most horribly underated DJs ever. Their sets are so incredibly deep; the judicious use of amens just magnifies their full impact and emphasise the brilliance of all those other dense polyrythmic amen-less tunes. Its incredible hearing so many mind-bending tracks that never made into the classic jungle canon.

might be a wee bit recent for you guys, but Naphta's "Soundclash 1" on Lightless recordings is a fantastic slice of modern ragga amen junglism

Theory's - "Conquering Lion" on Function is also a tasty slice of amen jungle
