Minimal house anthems

well apparently i share the same idea of soul and groove as these minimal people no? else they wouldn't have sampled it would they?

in this case it's only a matter of HOW MUCH of it a piece of music contains.

They might have found the one bar loop the only groovy and soulful thing of the sampled piece... or think that it really needs repetition for 8 minutes anda a techno bassline and drums to be groovy...

I dunno... but as has been repeated ad nauseum here and all over soul, groove, funk and other ill defined adjectives that are dependent on personal aesthics get thrown around to much.

i be first to agree... saw brian eno speak once and some first year art uni chick asked: "all this system music is great but what about soul???" save she was sitting a few rows back a backhand would have been good.

but... i'm finding it difficult to find replacement adjectives. life? vitality? vibes that make you lose your shit?

Yeah it is hard isn't it, guess that's one reason people use them so often. I don't know tho, dry, rigid, machine like lifless... altho the same argument could be used against those words too I guess.

there were plenty of people losing their shit to the vibes on saturday when it was played...so yeah, i'm not sure that helps us get any closer to what such imprecise terms might mean.

interestingly, those adjectives - soul, groove - are exactly those of the lazy take on minimal which is satirised (at least, i fucking HOPE it's satire) in, er, 'minimal', by matias aguayo (not a track i like in any of its various remixes, however).

That Koze remix is one of my favourite tunes of the year so far. Love it to bits. First time I've liked anything involved Aguayo, tho, so maybe doesn't appeal to his fans.

not even the koze, sorry!

not normally a fan of aguayo either actually...christ i sound like i hate everything!

DO like koze's remix of sascha funke on bpitch, DO like the brendon moeller remixes on applepips DO like the radio slave on r & s - obv those two don't exactly fall into the 'minimal house anthem' category but still - DO like the new melchior on cadenza - DO like the new slowhouse DO like the new channel x on upon you. there we go.

haven't heard "minimal" but "de papel" was my jam for a minute... funny it came on earlier today in the shuffle and i still enjoyed it.

but what the fuck is he saying on that song? or is it all in german because it sounds like "flashlight in your mouth"... really weird because it kinda sounds like the whole thing is english but not really.

bleh at people not rating 'really lost', best low-light dark-side acid latin sleaze house record ever.

zhao, dunno... from the opening verse i get something like:

m??? ain't shit
put the dope out your head
if i'm a stick around
got a flashlight in your mouth

but i know what you mean, it's terribly confusing language wise. i love it though... so woogly.

Lyrics to Minimal according to a poster on RA... which i dont think is satire at all, given how sex laden aguayo's grooves are.

Cause that music got no groove, got no balls, no
me hace pumpin’ pumpin' pumpin'(doesent make me fee like pumpin')
por que yo quiero bailar (cause i want to dance)
con un ritmo mas nocturno (with a rythm that's more nocturnal)
mas profundo (more deep)
mas sensual (more sensual)
basta ya de minimal ! (enough of minimal!)
que es lo que bailo (what i'm dancing)
otras movidas (other moves)
vas pa delante (going foward)
your gonna get

Quite liking a bunch of things on Mothership, although I have to admit I'm at least partly wooed by the lovely design. :)

I love label art that takes a repeating motif, logo, whatever and rejigs it a bit according to the individual release.

I see it's almost a year old, but been digging on the Todd Bodine remix of Paranoid especially. Not so sold on Claude VonStroke's latest (excluding the macaw sound fx!) although I've enjoyed other stuff by him plenty.

i don't think it's satire either, i don't know why it would be, i've never really seen him or koze really fit into that minimal stereotype, they're both a lot odder and housier, Aguayo has got a definite South American rhythm and colour in his tracks, certainly the more techno closer musik wasn't really minimal as well.

I think Cadenza has been absolutely on fire in the last year or so. Rhadoo -Dor Mit Oru, the los updates 12" (the album should be cool too), Alex Picone Ep and the Melchior EP, all top stuff!

well yeah sure, there's plenty of examples of 'minimal' - or stuff that's come out on labels associated with mnml - that isn't really minimal at all! the point surely is that 'minimal' or 'mnml' was/is a terribly imprecise and frequently misleading term...of course there's lots of dry boring house and techno out there though, and people who think it's a really great idea to insert a minimal woodblock sound into a cod prog house track...and as for 'mnml' not being 'odd and housey'...perlon?! EDIT rereading what you wrote, though, mms, you do say 'minimal stereotype', so fair enough :) but e.g. perlon sit pretty firmly at the centre of my conception of what minimal is...it's precisely the stereotype, tho, that i'm getting really sick of, way more so than the music itself. i guess it's similar to people characterising dubstep as 'nothing but stoopid wobblers'.

maybe i'm reading the lyrics of 'minimal' as satire cos i want to believe aguayo is taking a more sophisticated approach, rather than just cashing in on the backlash and accusing 'mnml' of a lack of soul, of earthy 'groove', cos obviously what we need are more cheesy vocals and maybe some latin flair in our tracks (no one's thought of THAT before have they?) tho i guess some would argue that getting people who are into 'mnml' to dance to a record that takes the piss out of their scene is very clever too...clever in a self-hating indie-ironic way, though.

definitely. and they have been for...well over a year i'd say. one of the most consistent labels around.

well you've forgotten the massive slice of pop in what's been classed as minimal too for about the past 6 years or so, which is for me one of the reasons it's interesting still, and reckon this track is fun rather than 'cheesy' , there aren't many people molding latin music into techno well, that sis track certainly doesn't, for the latin meme in minimal that tracks a bit like spongebob is for wobble i reckon.
I don't really take the lyrics as the serious insult you do, i think, also perlon and playhouse were around quite a while before the tag minimal was in use really.

the sis track just got released on villalobos' label. not a fan but, somehow, i've never heard it out, so shouldn't really judge. do like his 'standing' track.

yes it's a big room track innit, probably sounds magnificent played out but its not one i'd listen to at home or play often.

that may prove to be the case, but surely it's the 'horn' meme more? i.e. fizheuer and (cringe) 'heater', with the source of fizheuer obv. not being latin. it was inevitable that a track like fizheuer would spawn myriad lesser imitations, that's certainly how i'd see the sis track. [obv. i'm not saying that ricky v was the first dance producer to come up with the idea of using horns, but he demonstrated, again, how effective they can be on a dancefloor, and probably made lots of other minimal prodcers - who maybe hadn't heard egyptian empire - wonder about doing the same thing.]

i wouldn't dispute the importance of pop influence in minimal for a second...it's just not a strand of minimal i personally have enjoyed or sought out since, i guess, the period of kompakt that 'today' by superpitcher documented so perfectly. but as i say, minimal means very different things to different people...

i think i've probably over-analysed the lyrics of that aguayo track already, so i'm going to leave that one there :)

yes i suppose horn meme is more adequate although even though the riff in fizheuer sounds particulary latin. I reckon the stripped back 4 4 rhythm and naked horns thing can be stretched back to arthur russell if you needed too.
better off in some ways to call it techno or house, although even those are blurred, my dance records are sorted roughly into detroit, chicago, europe, jungle, two step, british, disco, industrial and 80's dance pop, grime/dubstep etc and a new section i'm just calling renegade.:)
