Great 2 Step?

Ach!

Turd on the Run
Thanks very much for all the mixes Owen.

I still haven't uploaded the DJ Operator mix I have on tape from '98/'99, seriously one of my favourite mixes of any genre of all time.

I'll get my ancient tape deck out and see how it sounds.

ps,

owen, the first 20mins of the Andy Lewis mix is so, so good, really brings me back.

Liberty X? Hardly inspiring, but for a manufactured pop band's debut single to get the garage treatment was a bold step. It could have been a whole lot worse.

Woman Trouble was alright. You cant help but like it with lyrics like these
"I feel bombastic fantastic ecstatically astounded
how a girl can really lose her brain
I feel surrounded confounded emotionally dumbfounded
to think she nearly won her game."

Robbie Craig is quite good, all told. One of the problems of Artful Dodger was that they often had really boring paint by numbers drum patterns. Coupled with weak, not raw enough backing tracks, it made for a poor combination, the opposite of the impact steve gurleys tunes had.

I saw him do a live PA at the Zapp (or maybe the beach) in Brighton. He is a very cheesy man. Woman Trouble is wicked, though

A couple of deep ones

Zed Bias & Principal- all night jam

SkyKap- Endorphins
One of the first 2-step tracks. Possibly before Dem 2

Urban Myths- Making Me Feel
Hearing like this doesnt do it proper justice. Heartless fave

DJ Double G- Special request
Pisses all over the True faith original

Some Treat- Lost in Vegas

Yeah there is something cheesy about Robbie Craig. I've heard the phrase Essex Girl Vocals, used to describe the kind of singers that were common in rave tunes, things like Baby D- let me be your fantasy. A lot of those singers went on to work in garage. Robbie Craig might as well have been the male version of the essex girl vocalist. High pitched overly dramatic vocals about messy break ups and his successful sexual conquests. But I still really like him. He's done so many good tunes.

Incidentally, I love the tune, but the lyrics in Monsta Boy's 'sorry' irritates me a bit. It's written by someone who almost certainly hasnt shagged his girlfriends best friend, and quite possibly has never been unfaithful full stop. R&B love songs have a lot to answer for.

i love that skykap 'endorphins' track, it's like that remix of 'the virus' by mutiny by el-b ; a description of music as a chemical effect within the body, I really want to own that track but never have.

"I'm sorry/ Should have known better than to sleep with your best friend"

Yeah, arguably, Monsta

Baby D were great. Artful Dodger weren't all bad. But Robbie Craig was abysmal! You're all mad.

there is that track oriental express on tempa which he did with another guy as daluq that's a goodie.

The early Zed Bias tunes were pretty deep, kinda steve gurley esque. Things like 'Buggin me', 'been here before'. Then he switched into full out bassline mode, though that was very good too.

This is a 15 minute clip from when Phuturistix went on 1Xtra's Basement show (sunday morning guest show of old tunes), probably around 2004/5
http://www.sendspace.com/file/utkapu

It's 3 2-step tunes in a row.
1. Crazy bald heads- first born
2. Zed Bias & Principal- All night jam (remix)
3. Groove Chronicles (or EL-B)- Taste Mine

Number one is very rare, and three never got released. Two is a more dubby mix of the one I posted a few threads up. Interesting stuff. I wonder if not living in london influenced Zed's production style

Fuck me, Muzik.

Jockey Slut was the best though
If it's moving this far fwd then there's also Sleazenation's Soundclash Volume 01 - Future Garage mixed by J Da Flex and Oris Jay. April 2003.

  • El-B Featuring Juiceman - J Da Flex Wickedest
  • Goldspot - Runnin # 6
  • Jammin' - Tonka (Menta Remix)
  • Darqwan - Pipe Dreams
  • Daluq - Superfine
  • Darqwan - Said The Spider (Remix)
  • DJ Shorty - Lorn Mowa
  • Benny Ill vs. DJ Hatcha - Highland Spring
  • Horsepower - The Swindle
  • Artwork - Red
  • Maddslinky - Reasons
  • Darqwan - Jack's New Swing
  • Geeneus - Journey (Oris Jay Remix)
  • Chase And Status - Like This
  • Jameson - Switch
  • DJ Abstract - Touch
That would be the beginnings of dubstep then.

Maybe that's a bit off track for this thread, thought it might be worth a mention though.

Zed Bias not living in London?

the 3 tunes on the Phuturistix mix are from 98-00 so they are pre dubstep. Thats quite an interesting CD there. What is Sleazenation magazine anyway, an upmarket Loaded?

And yes, Zed Bias/Dave Jones is from Milton Keynes, I think Steve Gurley is from Luton or Bedford, somewhere round there. Juiceman is from Birmingham/Northampton/near abouts. It's kinda interesting, these few people out in the sticks away from the main scene. And Sidewinder. What the fuck is a club doing away an hours drive away from its core audience. Did the local yokels turn up for that or was it just busloads from London

Whoa-B
