I would agree that its only really Alarm Will Sounds' Aphex twin project that has really pulled something like this off successfully. They really captured the whole essence of the music... its proper stripped back and works nicely.

Agreed. I'd make another exception for Possessed, the album with the Kraftwerk covers by Balanescu.

The Balanescu Quartet - Autobahn

Don't ask me why, but it just works here. Even when its equally cheesy. Dunno, maybe it works because they stripped Kraftwerk down to catchy pop-music and compensated for the lost of electronic timbre by their quite raw play. Maybe it's because they are noticeably less serious about what they're doing. Or maybe I'm just searching for excuses. :)

On a different note, anyone here have Anthony Shakir recommendations? That tune of his on AE's ATP compilation a couple years back was great, but I haven't really been able to dig up anything else by him...

Just have to second Gabba's take on Robert Hood.
"Electric N_____" is still such a standout track ...

Buy everything you find, even if you don't like it cos one rainy Sunday afternoon when you give it another try it will just click. Amazing artist.

I felt like a couple years ago there was a real Jeff Mills backlash on the various forums but now I don't feel that anymore. I think he just kinda faded into relative obscurity because he no longer represents the reigning sound in techno.

He wasn't very inspiring at DEMF this year. I get the feeling that his best years as a DJ are well behind him. He is still great as a producer. That Natural World record on Purpose Maker he put out last year is one of my favorite records from that year. He just has that funk and attention to detail that most techno producers just cannot grasp.

Even though he is the king and progenitor of loop techno his records are almost never 100% the same loop as many lesser producers. He would always switch things up a bit, add little edits and effects and progress the track from one point to the next. And he knows when to cut it short.

As far as Shake, I just can't get a hold of any of his records. They are really rare and sought after.

I just dont know
2 Shake sets (and a ton of other shit) here: http://pot313.blog.hr/#Anthony Shake Shakir

this site is overwhelmingly good, many many thanks for that

the Shake set from Munich is so sick. ridiculous breadth

i've been checking his productions also, he is amazing, such unique vibes

on that subject, does anyone have any specific recommendations for 12s? personal favourites etc...

Martin that 12 on Dust Science is really excellent

I particularly like "My Name Is Binky" on Metroplex, Sequence 10 on the original 10 records "Techno The New Dance Sound Of Detroit" comp, and "Mr Shakir's Beat Store" which is hip hop.

Good time to check back on Dissensus. That's a good interview there. Definitive. Answers so many questions and sets a lot of things straight.

It's interesting how the idea around 1993 was to strip it all back to basics to build back up. Too bad Hood stayed there (though I like his stuff).

But I am excited about the new Mills/Hood collaboration.

shake has a new ep out on morphine. Just got in fresh from rush hour. All tracks are still mindblowing. Still in the vein of broken edgy fwd techno which I love, and his drum programming is ridiculous, only guy who come close I guess is Aardvarck or Terrence Dixon.

Apparently Rush Hour are doing a '"best of" comp of his older Frictional material!!!

amazing news! That 12" on Morphosis is weirdly rude, not what you'd xpect from the label but Shake is kinda avant-Detroit anyway so it kinda fits.

i was always a big fan (except for his tech house phase or whatever that was), but i particulary enjoy what he's doing nowdays. most other detroit producers stopped doing interesting music years ago, but mills is still going strong. he brought the whole detroit sound on a new level..and there's maybe only a few more people on sahko label that come close to what he's doing. imo

I dunno about that - not the bit about Mills, I'm really only familiar w/his classic 90s material & the UR/X-101/2 stuff - yeah maybe some of the pioneers have fallen off or stopped making music altogether but there's still a ton of Detroit producers putting out great material these days; Parrish, Moodymann, Todd Osborn, DeepChord, Carl Craig is still doing good work, plus newer guys like Omar-S, Patrice Scott, Keith Worthy, Reggie Dokes, etc. in fact it kind of boggles my mind how much music comes out of Detroit & how good most of it is.

i agree on deepchord. i loved that recent album modell put out under his real name.
dunno about others though... maybe i just have a very specific taste for techno but i can't hear what mills is doing in any music of those other producers. he's got a completly unique aesthetics.. some others too, just not very interesting for me : )
