no, those guys are the worst. I seen too many crusty punk train hopping kids get into this faux 1930s, great depression hobo thing, dressing like tom joad + playing old-time music. like diy tom waits. it's a close relative of fake gypsy thing. eugene whatshisname is yunno, part roma, ok, but like I'm saying above, I have very little tolerance for new york (or whatever cool city) hipsters playing at romanticized gypsy (especially while, yunno, many actual roma live in dire poverty/are the target of serious racism). bela bartok didn't just grow a stupid mustache + pick up an accordian. he did a shitload of ethnological research on magyar + romani folk music.

I don't think he's specifically trying to look like a gypsy, just a generic old timey 30s guy, which is OK because apparently his granddad was one. It is a pretty lame scene though, almost as bad as steampunk.

no, still the worst. nothing against him personally. also tbc having actual roma (or whatever) heritage or not ain't the sticking point

i actually don't buy that that guy is a gypsy, i think it's all marketing hype... that said some of the best drunken nights out i've ever had were dancing to him djing Bregovic songs at that bulgarian bar on canal street 10 years ago...

Hackney is crawling with twats with swirly moustaches, bowler hats and so on (and their boyfriends look equally ridiculous, ahahaha), dressed like intrepid Victorian explorers or heroes from a steampunk graphic novel. It would be one thing if they worked as circus acrobats or played accordion in a revivalist music-hall orchestra but most of them are probably graphic designers or web developers.

Someone on twitter called food cunt is raucously satirising and winding up foodie types, quite funny. His tweets below remained me of this thread...maybe it's a dissensian in disguise. Eustace Horsemeat ‏@FOOD_CUNT

"Phew! All done shopping. Tonight I'm going to hit Soho dressed like the king of the fucking steam hipsters."
"Bought an oily rag for £45 from Labour and Wait. Already feel 20 times more authentic."

One of the things I learnt from Wimbledon last week is that Maria Sharapova listens to Lana Del Rey, which is a nice fit with the shadow of Cold War melancholia that hangs over Sharapova's life as well as the cool, hardly-beating corporate heart that underpins it.

Missed this first time round. Textbook example of the problems with the authenticity argument, or rather, the pitfalls inherent in the argument.

Authenticity is a hallucination. It seems solid from a distance, but almost without fail when you get up close you realise its smoke and cobwebs.

I liked the first LDR album. At least 3 great tunes on it. I think her window is gone now.

i keep imagining that her next album will be much more pop. i cant imagine her repeating her current shtick - i dont think it can go anywhere else now.
