Ha ha - just meant it wasn't just England who didn't play the most attractive football. Although they were the ones who were expected to - which I think was part of the problem, Graham Taylor had taken Watford far using a pretty direct style of football but when he was promoted to England manager he was expected to win and win pretty. Nothing to smart about from that game though was there, England did scrape through and went on to be knocked out on penalties in the semi-final by the Germans - or so I'm told, I couldn't bear to watch it.

Ha, that disallowed Benzema goal just now reminds me of that Barnes one. What a game that was anyway, most fun of the tournament so far I'd say.

We had Jack Charlton! Guilty of both taking us to two major championships including our first world cup and also squandering the talent of probably the best team we ever had by rigidly adhering to caveman football tactics - surprisingly effective as they were.

Incidentally, my uncle has some pics from that world cup of him and his mates in some Italian bar at 4 in the morning partying with the entire Ireland squad - taken before the quarter finals I think.

The best thing about that world cup was this:

Daniela Hantuchová went out in the first round of Wimbledon today. I was more annoyed about this than England and Italy crashing out of the World Cup.

Darned cockwombles.
Argentina -Nigeria is turning into another great game to add to the long list at this World Cup, albeit looking likely to deliver the expected South American win.

With Brazil beating Cameroon and Colombia the Ivory Coast, it set me thinking - is the first game of Italia 90 (Cameroon 1 Argentina 0) the only time an African team has ever beaten a South American team at the World Cup?
