nah, nothing as fancy as that! Similar sort of thing, and its a pioneer, but bottom of the range. I can't remember the name of the model now, but it does the job.

Flava is superb producing garage, grime and house and is much more 'now' than spooky really.

im not sure how true this is actually, now i think about it. this is a year when skepta is one of the biggest artists around. when 'pure' or straight grime is bigger than ever. when stormzy is a big name. id say its pretty 'now'. more than garage. and flava basically makes classicist garage. brilliantly done, but garage all the same. shes just come up through butterz so people still think of her as a grime producer. still, suppose its good fabriclive finally got a garage DJ/producer in. only took them 15 years. ok, 12 if you count EZ's one from a few years back. but still.

this is a ridiculous conversation, look at flava's bookings - solo and with tqd

go to any night outside of london and play one of her big tunes and it gets reaction of the night, she's a star

shes a good producer, shes a decent enough DJ (though i would maintain there are better in grime/garage), but i was just looking at everyone who has mixed fabriclive over the years after looking at some 'best mixes ever' lists, and couldnt help noticing that out of almost 90 volumes over some 15 or so years, there are maybe 6 mixed by non white DJs. you might think that is not important, and i wouldnt anyone getting the gig based some sort of diversity tokenism, but it just struck me as... interesting.

there are better djs (Q is untouchable imo) but she's very good and she's very very relevant to uk clubnights at the moment. one of the biggest djs on the circuit, like i say, look at her bookings. it's a very well-timed selection from them and they also always go with people they have working relationships with - and butterz have a fabric residency so it makes total sense

her and q on three decks at an in-store we did in '14:
not even the best set ive seen her play by a distance either - u seen the TQD sets?

btw benny thank you so much for that mediafire folder of live fm sets!

sorry rdr, I just don't really see what you're getting at with regard to flava d.

You’re saying that she’s just making straight ahead retro garage, but Spooky would be far more retro.

You’re saying she’s not popular enough for a fabric mix, though she’s clearly more popular and has wider appeal than spooky.

Then you’re saying it’s just a ‘trendy choice’, while at the same time arguing that old school purist retro grime is trendy and popular and should be represented instead.

You’re suggesting she’s not representing for proper grime despite coming up through butterz (a grime label), while overlooking the fact that she started in grime (and hip hop actually) since around 2009 and has worked with wiley several times, among other mcs. I think her first release for butterz was in like 2013.

Then you bring up race while overlooking the fact that she is in one of the most discriminated-against groups in the dance music industry anyway.

Obviously Fabric haven’t chosen her to represent grime anyway. She is mostly making garage/house and bass, through the prism of grime production. I think the fact she does it so successfully is testament to the actual, hard-earned and genuine grime credentials she has. She gets bonus points for having done all this without any heavy promotion, interviews etc. I’m chuffed for her and I reckon the cd will be ace.

ofc women are discriminated against. you seem to be saying 'well dont talk about race because sexism still exists'. im not saying you cant talk about the two things. but just cos theres sexism, doesnt mean that racism isnt there either.

this isnt really about HER, or what she does. as i mentioned, i like her productions. she is properly GOOD (though sorry, spooky just IS a better DJ, hopefully most people who like DJing can hear that). i was more irked by other things that her being announced as the latest DJ to mix a popular mix CD series represents.

its the same thing with the fabric main mix cd series tbh. you basically have to have invented a genre (techno) 3 decades ago to get a look in there if youre not white and male.

obv this isnt just about fabric. im only using them as fabric is an important club in london, fabriclive is one of the biggest places to play if youre doing 'bass', and the mix series is still a pretty big deal.

obv im not taking anything away from rodigan, logan sama, or anyone who is the best at what they do (a logan phrase lol), but i mean, yknow, the scales should be a bit more evenly tipped IMO when it comes to certain genres/scenes.

no i didn't mean that at all. i just thought you maybe brought up the race thing to suggest she had got the deal through white privilege, whereas i think that privilege (which undoubtedly exists and we should talk about it) would be more or less cancelled out by being female anyway. you say you weren't really referring to her case specifically and were talking about more general trends - fair enough then. i just don't think bringing it up in relation to flava d was the best way to make the point.

i dont know if being female exactly does 'cancel out' white privilege tbh. i dunno, social heirarchies can sort of zig zag and cut across and in between diff groups rather than it just be a straight order of vertical tiers. but i def think there should be more female DJs and producers, yes. id absolutely LOVE to see jlin or laurel halo do a fabriclive

im having two staggeringly shit weeks so it doesnt take much to piss me off right now, and im not thinking my clearest. and i dont think anyone could say that black artists/producers/DJs dont get coverage in dance music. in western music, in general, representation is basically white, or its black, with a few exceptions here and there. so im not trying to turn this into a big sweeping statement. i just think for a series that covers dance sub genres, the issue of who gets picked is an interesting one. its a reflection of what gets played at fabric anyway, which is related to the wider dance music establishment, and who and what gets 'approved', who doesnt, and *when*, which i think is an interesting issue in relation to the type of recombinant garage flava d makes/plays, and 2005-forever grime, which a decade ago wouldnt have gotten a look in at many clubs, but now does.

id have picked spooky personally. or grandmixxer.

Is Spooky popular enough for a Fabriclive mix?

DJ Q would have been the best option for the ukg/house n bass/grime intersection, but this looks awesome anyway. I think flava has improved a lot as a dj recently and her kiss radio show is wicked too.

is flava d? how popular is she really? im genuinely interested to know. and if she is more popular, why is that? i know she draws from a wider pool, beats wise, than spooky or grandmixxer, but is she that good a DJ? im not sure.

agree on DJ Q.

Weird, one DJ doesn't get chosen over another to do one, they release them bimonthly so there is more than enough time for Spyro, DJ Q, Spooky, Grandmixxer etc to all be part of the series at some point not at the expense of one another.

In terms of Flava, we all know on here we work together so I'll try and clear up a few points.

Flava started playing in clubs in 2013, and practiced on Rinse FM too live, so people that listened then would be hearing someone learning fully on air, nothing wrong with that if you think there's been an improvement. That's what those platforms are for, and why it's great there are more available now then there were then.

The first time she played at fabric was bottom of the line up Room 2 opening for Butterz in Nov 2013, and the launch in July will be her first time headlining Fabric solo, she did in April alongside DJ Q & Royal-T as t q d.

In that time, she's played at fabric once a quarter every quarter building her name, and way up the line up. In the time since, she's released a ton of music and collaborations, and her DJ popularity has risen elsewhere, playing festivals, and club nights across the UK, Europe and world constantly. She's just started her 3rd U.S tour for example this weekend and maintains a weekly slot on Kiss Fresh.

When approached with the project back in July she said she wanted to produce the majority of it herself, which hasn't been done before on a fabriclive edition, on a couple of the fabric ones I think Omar S and Villalobos produced theirs. She is the second female to do one in 88 editions, the other being Monki.

Its good timing for everyone really that it's coming now, considering she got asked to it last July.

She's always made a variety of stuff, and not many now would call her a 'classicist garage' producer. A few bits from the last 12 months.

Soul Shake - 'Bass House?'

Shredded Wheat (feat Wiley & Cadell) - Grime

Happy feat Miss Fire - Garage, kinda poppy thing?
https://soundcloud.com/fabric/flava-d-miss-fire-happy-taken-from-fabriclive-88

Hip Hop?
https://soundcloud.com/flava_d/how-deep

Nothing wrong with not liking her music or anything but implying she doesn't deserve the opportunity I think is unfair as she works fucking hard constantly.

She's only the SECOND woman in 88 editions?! That's pretty mad. Not that I'd blame Fabric for that, there's obviously a lack of female DJs on the club circuit generally.

Pretty inspiring that she only started DJing in 2013 and now she's where she is.

Stay tuned for Corpsey: Fabriclive in 2019!
