Laura Nyro's Christmas And The Beads Of Sweat is my favorite ever record of of any description, but it's not particularly Christmas-y. Unless your Christmas involves depicting the end of the hippy dream as a blakean confrontation between good & evil on the streets of new york, to a soundtrack of bonkers pagan-catholic gospel.

too right...I'm a huge Laura Nyro fan, but I avoided that album for years, at my peril, because of the word "Christmas" in the title...big mistake, it's awesome, and even has the Muscle Shoals session crew on side 1...

Any posts not involving KirstyMcColl and The Pogues needs to be censured by His Fordship

"Fairytale Of New York" is truly one of the finest tracks ever recorded. Always makes me tear up like a big softie.

Folorn Shaka-style steppers!

And the Pogues, of course.

Norwegian Wood
"Things Fall Apart"/Cristina. No question.

Others:
  • "Blue Christmas"/Elvis Presley
  • "Two Thousand Miles"/The Pretenders
  • "Christmas Card From A Hooker In Minneapolis" from Tom Waits' finest album "Blue Valentine"
Worst: that Emerson, Lake and Palmer number.

This year, the xmas tune that really gets me when I hear it in the shops is "Driving Home For Christmas" by Chris Rea. Maybe it's coedeine that i'm on for this cold :)

Wacky ones that I usually play the most are

Sun Ra - "Christmas Time / Happy New Year To You" 7"
Tijuana Christmas LP (whole thing is genius)
Destinys Child "Do You Hear What I Hear" off the xmas CD
Vince Guaraldi Trio "A Charlie Brown Christmas" LP

I am disgusted that I am reply No. 16 and am the first to say The Waitresses - Christmas Wrapping. It is obvious to any right thibking person tha this is the best christmas record ever. As for the Pogues, try living in Ireland and hearing Fairytale of New York about 40 times a day - see how much you like it then.

Merry Christmas

mariah carey - all i want for christmas
on rinse this morning on my way to work, jiggy b was playing old skool ukg and he kept hyping up the next tune 'YOU LOT ARENT READY FOR THIS ONE!!!' and 'I WANT TEN MISSED CALLS BEFORE THIS NEXT ONE COMES ON!!!' etc etc etc. it was so brilliant that the tune he ended up playing was the mariah song (no really, it was). he said the management might fire him for playing it but we all know thats a big lie. its unpredictable moments like that that make pirate radio better than boring commercial radio (sort of like last year on rinse where around this same time, they were having phone in competitions for people to guess old tv theme tunes).
