it's like our cartoon phsyics thread and then they've gone and added cartoon voices and violent slapstick on the top.

There is something really childish and weird about it, particularly now that drill's usurped it. It's almost like CBBC or something.

i was about to ask if at the time it already sounded hilarious or if it was more scary. or both of course.

i remember there were these older kids called marvyn and brady who were maybe 10 years older than me who'd throw chicken shop chips at me. i have vague associations of them with grime, but i don't know if i've made that up. could phones back then even play music?

I wonder whether there's any correlation with how games have developed. The people making grime grew up on much less realistic games and the sounds are often woven into the music, all the blips and bloops, it sounds like Sonic, Mario etc. Nowadays the games strive for realism, grit.

i can imagine drill sounding hilarious one day too. things like "stick in my shank and twist it, ballistic" and "bits and bobs in a frightening block" have a mary poppins quality to them.

british people doing jamaican accents is one of the great pleasures in this life. riko's isn't too bad actually. it's got much worse recently with lowkey's one for example. he sounds like me doing it.

Zone 2 putting those coin/blip noises in that diss track a few weeks back was jarring -- so out of place in a drill beat.

The "overly emotive delivery" you get in Dizzee and later, in an even more exaggerated form, with demon, I felt was derived from Freeway at the time. That sense that he is on the verge of bursting into tears.

My Schtick about demon and dizze et al is that they’re finding this middle ground between a squawking east end “oh ‘Ello darlin” and an impassioned Nigerian accent. There’s a certain crossover between those two accents- a certain hysteria- that these grime rappers are merging.

You get the verge of tears thing, in a very silly way, in late period ghostface but I don't think that was an influence.

There’s a song called “I can’t sleep” or something off of the w where ghost literally is faux crying his verse
