Regarding Obama, of course he wasn't the saviour a lot of liberals wanted him to be but he's in a whole other universe from Johnson as far as personal integrity goes, isn't he?

Yeah, but he still ordered hundreds of drone strikes and probably plenty of other things too.

Yeah, but he still ordered hundreds of drone strikes and probably plenty of other things too.

Yeah I know, hence the bit about him not being the saviour. He bailed out all those failing banks and hedge funds without forcing any real change that would prevent another future crisis, too. But to look at it another way: is it conceivable that someone who would've behaved significantly differently could ever become POTUS in the first place? (I suppose the answer is that we may be about to find out.)

Yeah, I was about to make the point you have to be a bit of a bastard to do the job in the first place. You're knowingly putting yourself in a position which requires you to do appalling things.

Infinitely worse than Johnson. He deserves the gallows for the shale industry alone.

I think we can all agree that it would have been hugely disappointing if he had shaken it off as though it were a common cold and gone straight back to work.

what do you think he will do if he gets it really badly, four weeks on a breathing machine, thinking he's gonna die? will it change him?

I always liked that Bill Hicks bit about after every inauguration the new president gets taken into a dark windowless room with a projecter and they sit him down and the film rolls and it's footage of the JFK assassination, but from an angle never aired publicly before and they make him watch it and when it's done they go, so, any questions?

In the short term, sure, I think so, even if he disguises it with bluster. Any brush with mortality will.

from karl marx's capital:

At the same time, this portion of the Act strikingly shows that the capitalist mode of production, owing to its very nature, excludes all rational improvement beyond a certain point. It has been stated over and over again that the English doctors are unanimous in declaring that where the work is continuous, 500 cubic feet is the very least space that should be allowed for each person. Now, if the Factory Acts, owing to their compulsory provisions, indirectly hasten on the conversion of small workshops into factories, thus indirectly attacking the proprietary rights of the smaller capitalists, and assuring a monopoly to the great ones, so, if it were made obligatory to provide the proper space for each workman in every workshop, thousands of small employers would, at one full swoop, be expropriated directly! The very root of the capitalist mode of production, i.e., the self-expansion of all capital, large or small, by means of the “free” purchase and consumption of labour-power, would be attacked. Factory legislation is therefore brought to a deadlock before these 500 cubic feet of breathing space. The sanitary officers, the industrial inquiry commissioners, the factory inspectors, all harp, over and over again, upon the necessity for those 500 cubic feet, and upon the impossibility of wringing them out of capital. They thus, in fact, declare that consumption and other lung diseases among the workpeople are necessary conditions to the existence of capital.

The survival rate for intensive care admission with the virus in the UK is 40%.
Yeah across all hospitals etc Expect Johnson probably has better than average care with more time and resources dedicated to him than the average prole.

I doubt there'll be any consequences for him if he makes it through. The public will feel sorry for and rally around him because he was really ill with it and the media will find some ideological opponent to blame.

I think a lot of people are going to die and the rest are gonna be pissed off. And then the economy will tank.
